Very professional staff in visitors center with a lot of great information to pass on. Take the four mile dirt road around the preserve and take in all nature provides you. Saw three large alligators sunning themselves as well, as hundreds of birds of varying species. Beautiful groves of mossy live oak canopied lanes.
Very pleasant couple of hours for free. A donation is appreciated to keep up the preservation of this area and we were more then happy to help with these volunteers efforts.

Even though it's Winter, there is a lot to enjoy here. The short drive taken at a slow pace lets one take it all in. With less folage visibility is great...

The visitor center here is a nature lovers paradise appealing to children and adults. The video is educational as are all of the displays. A 4 mile ride through the preserve will display various wildlife at different seasons. Check their website for special events and plan your visit for a special treat.

We were heading to Hilton Head for vacation and had an early flight arrival into Savannah Airport. Since we knew our room would not be ready we stopped at the refuge which was on the way. The visitor center was small but had maps of the area as well as bathrooms. The walking trail was unimpressive and very buggy so we quickly left and drove to the 4 mile loop around a portion of the reserve by car. It is so worth your time. It has multiple pull off areas where you can park and look for wildlife. There were multiple types of birds, turtles and alligators. There was a bird blind that was overlooking the marsh - very pretty. There were also a number of walking trails that were from a mile long to 4 miles long for a round trip. We did not take any of these but did see multiple people parking on the side of the roads with their binoculars walking on the trails. It is about an hour stop if you do not take the trails. Well worth a visit.
