Owner description: The Foundation welcomes visitors to explore daily life in one of Charleston's most exquisite dwellings. Located in Downtown Charleston near High Battery, the Nathaniel Russell House Museum, 51 Meeting Street, is widely recognized as one of America's most important neoclassical dwellings. Historic Charleston Foundation purchased the National Historic Landmark in 1955, and the house served as the Foundation's headquarters for 37 years. Today, the interiors are restored to their original 1808 grandeur and surrounded by formal gardens.

This lovely old house has undergone renovation, and the result is stunning: Lovely trompe l'oeil throughout, unique geometric floor plan, and exquisite staircase, to list a few of the standout features. Our guide was engaging and very knowledgeable about Neo-classical architecture and the family's history. Definitely worth seeing.

We stopped in to view this historic house and learn more about Nathaniel Russel. The house itself has been beautifully restored and contains many period furnishings & accessories. The rooms are large & well lit. The main attractions are the beautiful woodwork and the magnificent circular staircase. The volunteer tour docent is quite knowledgeable & proved useful insights into the family and the house itself - wonderful!

Lovely Charleston home and garden. The tour was very informative and enjoyable, and gave one an idea of what home life was like in previous centuries. Do go!
