You eat at a place like this you understand why people aren’t going to the chains as much. Food is fresh. Menu original. Is one of the best restaurants in Pittsburgh. A little out of the way but that adds to the ambience. Full service bar - looking forward to going back

Really an exceptional meal, starting with Haloumi, then the steak and cornish hen, and the olive oil cake. All beautifully accented and presented. Absolutely delicious. The wine was nice, the service very pleasant. The proprietor was out and about. Cozy. Highly recommend!

We accidently discovered Scratch in Sept 2016 looking for a place for dinner before a retreat whilst visiting from New York. We dined on the most delicious memorable hamburger. Attending the same retreat this past weekend, we made reservations in anticipation of that amazing hamburger. Upon arrival, we discovered new menu/new chef. OK, we are open minded and decided to be optimistic to dine on a delicious assortment of small plates with a large plate to share. There were four of us, we tried the arancini, the squash, the beets, the grain dish, and the full plate of skate fish. Two of five were delightful - the beets and the grain dish. The squash was a bit bland and dry. The fried items failed. Not sure if we were too early in the evening and the oil was not quite hot enough, because both the arancini and the fish were greasy and over cooked. Very small portions for more than they are worth. Drinking only water (since we needed to stay awake for a session that evening,) our check was $30 each with tax and tip for a couple bits of food! I have traveled the world, recently in Spain enjoying tapas meals so I know the bit! I have tasted perfectly cooked arancini. I have tasted tender, crispy, not greasy fish (try Mourne in Belfast.) Not sure if frying is the best option for skate fish, the stringy muscle had not tenderized and was chewy. Skate needs to cook a little longer than haddocks, cods, halibuts that are usually fried in the manner presented. Not sure if it was a one time experience or the chef doesn't quite have the whole process down yet.

This restaurant is truly a highlight in Pittsburgh dining! Go with a group, order everything on the menu and share. Price for value is spot on, service is very attentive and accommodating. Very inventive cocktail options as well. Rustic atmosphere is a tribute to the roots of the neighborhood.

We were four people and shared: Corn dip, zucchini, Summer curry, Spicy lamb sausage , and the Gemelli. All of the plates were delicious-wonderful flavors and presentation, and portions.
