Although the corn mazes are not quite in season in mid-August, the pick-your-own sunflower patch is a great way to spend an hour or two in the summer. We pre-purchased our tickets online and received wrist-bands for the hayride to the field. Once in the field, you are given a pair of pruning shears and a paper listing the different varieties of sunflowers. There are at least 28 varieties available for cutting. I never realized there were so many different sunflowers.
One sunflower is included with your admission, but we also added a "+6" ticket and a "bucket +6" ticket. We came away with a total of 16 sunflowers for a family of four. After you pick the flowers, the friendly staff helps you place the stems in a plastic bag filled with water and zip-tied to keep most of the water inside. Carrying the large sunflowers was challenging, but the hayride back to the parking area makes the walking distance very short.
While we were in the field, we enjoyed the music from the live band playing classic rock songs from bands such as Lynyrd Skynyrd and The Eagles. There were a few food trucks available near the music tent as well.
All in all, the staff was friendly and helpful, the flowers were beautiful, and the hayride was fun. We will be back in the fall for the actual Maize Quest events.
