“Value for Money”
Reviewed 6 January 2012

I have been to Coolangatta Estate for many years since my children were little. We now go back each year in January with my kids, their spouses and now their children. Sure it's not 5 Star but it's clean, comfortable private and has a variety of activities to keep us busy. Tennis, pool, games room, BBQ, golf, croquet or bocce. The food is great or do your own thing. Berry and Nowra nearby for great shopping or movies. Fabulous beaches, lovely walks, so much history. Bigfoot is back, a cheap ride up the mountain to spectacular views. The layout of the cottages allows for privacy in beautiful gardens and quiet soothing surrounds. We loved it so much we had our wedding there two years ago. What an awesome experience. Tony is the ultimate professional and we were very well looked after. The price was more than reasonable. I think you would be very hard to please if you didn't see the value in this lovely old-fashioned estate. Thank you to all the staff who always make us feel welcome. We've already booked in for next year!

Room Tip: There is such a variety of styles. I love them all.

We stayed here following a function at the restaurant. We had a suite booked. Very spacious and comfortable but sparsely furnished. First impression was that we were not allocated a suite, until we saw other accommodation! The accommodation did not match the price paid. Perhaps they were relying on reputation or uniqueness. Having said that we had a very good nights sleep, no extraneous noise. We did run out of hot water in the shower. Perhaps the installation of water saving shower heads would be advantageous.

Room Tip: Select a suite for space. Prepare to pay for the privilege.

I want to put a disclaimer on this review. A lot of the small elements that bothered me about this place (the terrible muzak in the restaurant, the abrupt staff members and the bad decor) were raved about by a 60ish year old lady at the breakfast table behind ours. We are a couple in our 30s, so perhaps this was just a generational difference.

We stayed at Coolangatta Estate for two nights for a friend's nearby wedding. When we arrived at 8.30pm on a Friday night the restaurant was very accommodating in letting us order- however we were given a strict 2 minutes to order, otherwise we would not be served as the chef was finishing. Regardless of this very abrupt start to our stay, the food was delicious. Lovely wine, and perfectly cooked meals- this was clearly the highlight of our stay at the Estate.

We drove to our "Village Room" in the "The Lodge" and I was dismayed to find that our room was literally behind the carpark- much more like a Motel than the accommodation I was expecting. Undeterred, we unpacked and opened our room to a very stale and musty smell, that did not improve my dismay. The room was full of dated and badly placed furniture. Trying to keep positive, I walked into the bedroom to find that our outdated ensuite bathroom was not only run down but literally had the toilet next to our bedhead, and a disabled shower that flooded the entire bathroom on use, complete with disabled chair in the shower. In the morning, I did not get the opportunity to have a shower as the hot water had run out during my husband's shower. This was the final straw.

We went to reception and asked if we could move rooms. They were fully booked, but told us they would allow a switch to a currently closed room, as long as we didn't mind the paint fumes, as it had newly been painted. When we suggested this wasn't a great solution, we were upgraded to a room in the sub-divided Cottage.

This upgrade was basic at best. We now had a properly structured shower, however the bathroom remained shabby. The terracotta tiles were dirty and the sink taps were grimy. Still, it was better than where we started.

The room is decorated in an old style (matching curtains and lampshades), which is not a criticism- just an observation. However, the room was not soundproof- we could hear both neighbours conversation word for word. Our balcony had a small divider, which gave no privacy and the room was dark and underlit.

I would not recommend the Coolangatta Estate as anything but basic. However, if you do find yourself here- definitely avoid room 32!!

Needed special place for a wedding anniversary and Coolangatta was perfect we were able to spend the whole time at the estate using the golf course and tennis court - unfortunately to cold for the pool. Enjoyed relaxing on our verandah with views of the vineyard, loved the cellar door and the wines were superb, had a long lunch in Alexanders restaurant great views there also and their 'regional plate' with the 4 wines was a must.

Had dinner on one night also in Alexanders and had the best beef I've eaten in along time, staff had just the right amount of attentiveness - not hovering over you which I hate. The wine buffet was great - fantastic idea.

The bed was really comfortable and we love the fact that all the acco -mmodation is spread out throughout the estate.

We found all the staff really friendly and the cellar door people were able to fill us in on all the local attractions, the history of the estate as well as the wines -great.

We'll be back!!!

Room Tip: All rooms seemed to be very different - if a golfer the rooms on the northern side of the Stables wo...

Took a weekend off work and went down the coast with the wife and kids and what a fantastic weekend we had.
Food was great, Friendly staff. Old decor, but was to be expected with the place being convict built and all.
A bit too cold for the pool, but the games room was a hit with the kids. Big breakys went down a treat too. We booked through 'wotif' which had a great special going.
And there was even free winetasting in the wine cellar to boot!
Thanks. We will be back.
