Walking Wombles
Central Coast, Australia
A little disappointing
3.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 9 Apr 2016via mobile
I was looking for something between the very expensive top end luxury resorts and what looked like 'low' budget backpacker accommodation (though nothing is low budget on Lord Howe Island!) It's a bit hard when you can only see a few photos online but Pandanus looked like it fitted the bill so I booked. Whilst not unbearable, the cabins were definitely a bit run down and in need of some maintenance (for example, the windows rattled quite badly, the bathroom door handle was hard to open, the outdoor furniture looked old). The bathroom in particular could do with renovation. The bedrooms were quite basic in furniture but the beds were large and comfortable, the kitchen lacked an oven but was reasonably well kitted out otherwise especially if you were happy to cook outside on the barbecue. The gardens were lovely and there was a large bike rack.

Be aware that Pandanus is up a hill. There is a short but steep walk up from the musuem and grocery shop in one direction and a longer but more gradual hill from the village in the other direction. If you walk down to the village it will take 10-15 minutes, quicker by bike. The owner Liz will drop you off at any of the restaurants in the evening if you let her know in advance and the restaurants will drop you back home afterwards.

Bearing in mind the fact that everything is expensive, I still feel Pandanus was overpriced and we would have been better off opting for somewhere a little closer to the village and probably cheaper too. Having said that Lord Howe is absolutely stunning and I am so glad we did the trip, it has to be one of the most beautiful destinations in Australia, if not the world

Pandanus apartments are set in a beautiful garden but the apartments have really seen better days. Liz, our host, was fantastic - friendly and helpful but the apartment facilities really need to be updated.

Also, this property is located "up the hill", so you need to be prepared to walk to most attractions and shops during the day. In the evening, Liz offers transport to any of the restaurants on the island (and the restaurants offer return transfer) but during the day it can be a strenuous walk depending on your fitness. Bikes are available to get around, but you need to be pretty fit to ride up either of the hills to Pandanus (we walked the bikes up).

Stayed over xmas so paid $715 p/n for 2 bed, not much less than arajila would have cost and we would have got 3 meals a day included at arajila. Rooms very basic, bathroom dated, 70's era, bed very hard. Back deck furniture in good need of cleaning, both deck floors in good need of cleaning. No aircon or wifi in room. Only 1 bathroom for 2 bed. Not a bad location. Well worth hiring bikes whilst there. On site restaurant is pretty good, all food options are pretty good. Overall thought it was overpriced and in need of an update.

Room tip: Quiet but I would not return.

The self contained unit had everything we needed. Very spacious and the front deck has a wonderful view to the garden.
Liz was so good! She was always there with all the answers and tips, so so helpful. She even takes you to all your shops on arrival to get whatever you need.
We enjoyed our stay a lot

Located in a beautiful garden surrounded by palm trees and hibiscus, Pandanus Apartments are a great place to stay. The bungalow was very neat and clean and included comfy beds, a fridge and an outdoor BBQ. The private outdoor area was lovely and the perfect place to have breakfast and spend some quiet time. I stayed there a week and could have picture myself staying a month! I highly recommend it.

4 of us dined at Pandanus one night, 3 ordering a great pasta dish filled with prawns, cherry tomatoes and olives. The other meal ordered was a "bouillabaisse" [supposedly!] - it contained 1 mussel, 1 prawn, 1 minute piece of fish and a bit of a scallop in about 1cm of a sauce. Thinking a mistake had been made and it was only an entree size, we queried the waitress who confirmed, via the cook, that it was in fact a main!! Absolutely pathetic.

If you want a proper bouillabaisse, suggest you dine at Beachcomber on a Tuesday night.
