We stayed here for 4 nights having stayed at Arajilla on a previous visit. We figured that given (weather allowing) you spend most if your time out enjoying the island we would save our money and go for somewhere a bit cheaper this time.
The property is well located and the overall apartment size is good, though the bathroom in our room ( Frangipani 7) was on the small side. Given we only really wanted the room for sleeping, it was a shame the bed was so uncomfortable though after the Mount Gower walk that didn't hinder sleep!
We ate nearly all our meals at the Anchorage restaurant a short walk away which was excellent - you can stay at Somerset and eat there for a lot less money than Pinetrees inclusive deals (or the 2 top end options, Arajilla and Capella). Somerset is also much better located than Leanda Lai and Earls Anchorage, which would seem their comparable competitors
In summary, lots going for it, but don't expect anything too luxurious - if that's your priority, you need to spend a lot more....

Stayed there for four days and found the room to be basic and clean. Though we didn't cook at all, the kitchen was stocked with all the cooking utensils required. The room entertainment consisted of only an old CRT TV which would have been fine for night(s) only had it not rained straight for two days as there was only two TV channels. So pack yourself with a little extra entertainment. In terms of tips, pack light weight rain coat, extra socks and be prepared to wave hello to everyone on the way and back!

Our stay at Somerset was just as we had hoped and expected, having previously stayed at Somerset, as well as other properties on Lord Howe Island.
Somerset provides good clean accommodation in a very central location. We chose Somerset for the flat walk to the shops and cafe on Ned's Beach Road, as well as being close to both Lagoon and Ned's Beach swimming spots. My Dad (75 years) was able to walk easily to lunch at Humpty Micks (now Anchorage) or Thompson's Store.
The 3BR apartment suited us well - the kids (4 and 7 y/o girls) shared a room with bunk bed, my Dad had his own room (with twin beds) and my wife and I had the queen bed in the main bedroom. Our queen bed mattress was quite hard and somewhat uncomfortable; the rest of the beds were fine.
The kitchen and living area were very large, so we ate at home frequently, purchasing fresh meat, fish and vegetables from The Top Shop, as well as basic groceries from Joys Store. Somerset supplied some instant coffee and sugar sachets, and made it clear we needed to purchase further supplies from the local stores.
The staff at Somerset were friendly and helpful, but sometimes difficult to find when you need something. The office wasn't open early or late, which meant having to plan ahead when you needed assistance.
We look forward to future trips to Lord Howe Island and will happily stay at Somerset again. The location is great, the staff are friendly and the rooms and grounds very well maintained.
Special thanks to Rebecca and Gai for extending our stay at no charge and honouring our 7-day booking despite arriving 2 days late thanks to weather-related flight cancellations.

Room Tip: The 3-bedroom family apartment is set away from the rest of the apartments at Somerset and has a very good kitchen and large lounge room with a proper size TV (not large or flat screen though).

Our extended family of 10 (ages ranged from 80+ to 16) stayed at the Somerset Apartments over the Xmas week. The Somerset team made our stay a very happy occasion and they provided all the help and care we could have wanted. One of our party was an elderly lady in a wheelchair and shortly after arrival we found one of the staff building a wheel chair ramp to her apartment - an un-asked for but very much appreciated convenience. Several other kindnesses followed. Somerset also provided transport to restaurants, though we hardly needed it being close to "Downtown". While Somerset provides simple "no-fuss" accommodation, it was of good quality, clean, well appointed and maintained and quite comfortable. The staff were very all obliging and friendly and went out of their way to help us. Our several LHI tours were particularly pleasant and easy to access - indeed all the operators came to our door and were very knowledgeable. And even though the weather was unseasonably windy and drizzly for several days, we all had a most relaxing and happy time, and perhaps the best holiday we have had in a long while.

Room Tip: All are conveniently placed and of similar standards. We found the Frangipani rooms quite agreeable.

We stayed at Somerset apartments for 5 nights. Our one bedroom apartment had everything we needed and was clean and confortable. Although a hot plate would be a useful addition there was a BBQ right outside and, after checking out the price of food to cook, we decided the restaurants were more appealing. Beautifully cooked food and no washing up. The service at Somerset was friendly and accessible but not intrusive and this suited us fine. A terrific location for those who want no frills accommodation. The provision of back packs and umbrellas was a nice touch. We remembered out torches and we needed them- no street lights.
