Owner description: One of Australia’s best kept secrets The National Museum of Australian Pottery in Holbrook, is the only Museum dedicated to 19th and early 20th century Australian pottery.Over 1,500 pieces of domestic pottery are on display from over 120 Australian pottery companies established between European settlement and 1920. The Collection represents in many ways the struggle, courage and determination of many of our early potters who, often under difficult circumstances, produced basic and decorative pottery, frequently with spectacular results. The Museum is open Thursday to Tuesday, 9.30 to 4.30. For groups of 20 to 50 we have a special offer. Homemade Devonshire tea available.

The artefacts are as Australian as you can get and are both interesting and of historical significance. What intrigued me most is on the outside of the building there are messages in braille (I'll leave it to you to work out what it says) and the tiled part of the building has a message in one of those weird bar codes you can scan with your phone..enjoy

We were on our way to Albury and having a picnic across the road from the Museum, and we were laughing at the pretentious title. "National Museum", indeed! Until we looked in TripAdvisor and saw the very positive comments. Let's give it a whirl, we agreed. Well, what a fabulous collection in a wonderful old emporium. The Fords must have one of the best collections of Australian colonial pottery in the country - well worth a visit for the history as well as the ceramics aspect.

The collection of early Australian pottery is definitely the best in Australia and so well curated by Geoff and Kerrie Ford. The outstanding feature of the museum is the detailed descriptions of the lives of the potters, many of them convicts, who because of their expertise as potters became free men. The range of pieces and the number of potteries represented is extensive and they give a wonderful insight into our early history. Well worth a diversion off the Hume highway but really a must-see for anyone with an interest in Australian history.
