“Everything But The Room”
Reviewed 25 March 2012

We spent a weekend in this lovingly restored manor house and quite pleased with the property and its common areas. Everything from the surrounding grounds, the hotel's facade, the beautiful and cosy common rooms and fireplaces, the amenities on the properties, all help to make you feel right at home and comfortable whilst staying here. If only the rooms lived up to the quality of the rest of the hotel.

The hotel has a lot of things to offer. There is a billiards room, a small, yet suitable fitness centre, the golf course next door, lovely walking areas, a nice restaurant and friendly efficient staff. We made sure to spend a lot of time in the large reading rooms with its 2 open fireplaces as well, as this made the whole experience very cosy and comfortable for us to relax in during the cold rainy days.

We had upgraded to the Elms Balcony room, since other reviews had complained about the size of the other rooms. We were sufficiently satisfied with the size of the rooms. However, there were a few things worth noting that we weren't too happy about in this room. The beds were not true king beds, but king singles pushed together. This made the night sleep uncomfortable for a couple that aren't used to sleeping separated during the night. The ditch in the middle made it uncomfortable. Plus the bed tended to move away from the wall, as it wheeled away from it due to certain movement. The TV was awkwardly situated in front of one of the wardrobe doors, which isn't too big a deal but something not seen before in similar standard hotels. The shower area was poorly designed. Water leaks everytime the shower is used, due to the gap between the door and the glass wall. We had also noticed that the cleaning was quite haphazard. Let's just say not all the hairs were cleaned in the toilet. Finally the cheap iron provided in the room made ironing a worse chore than it already is. The heat generated from the iron meant that you had to iron over the same area 4 times to get the majority of the wrinkles out. Even then I still wasn't satisfied the shirt had been ironed properly. We were a little surprised as well, that we shared our balcony with the other guests. So you will want to draw your curtains to ensure people don't walk passed your room and see inside it. Perhaps the most disappointing part of our room was the lack of a view. We looked directly at a shed. We had to walk down passed the other guest's rooms to see a proper view, whilst always making sure we didn't turn and look into the other guest's windows. Overall the other aspects of the room was fine. There were basic amenities supplied, tea and coffee making facilities and a desk.

The hotel is situated in a nice private area of Bowral, but still within an easy drive to the main town centre. Had the rooms not been a disappointment, then we would have given this hotel a higher rating than we did. Perhaps our expectations of the Elms Balcony room were a little higher than what was experienced.

Room Tip: Make sure you have a nice view, otherwise there is no point paying for a balcony room.

Dear TravellingCarito

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback on your stay.

As you mention Peppers Craigieburn is a lovely old building set amongst beautiful gardens and grounds The public lounge areas are large and inviting a great place to spend time reading or enjoying a drink or meal with family or friends.

The Elms Balcony rooms offer views from a shared balcony as stated on our website. Part of the view is over the original stables circa 1887 which is to most a point of interest.

Thank you for highlighting the issue with the iron, if you had mentioned this to Reception at the time it would have been replaced immediately. Your comments on the cleaning will be passed on, disappointing as this area is normally of a very high standard. I am sorry that you found issue with the bed which most find quite comfortable. Most hotels today use this style of bed which allows different bedding requests.

Thank you once again for your feedback.

Kind regards
Robyn Bautovich

We spent one night at Craigieburn and were very pleased with this accommodation, the staff were friendly on arrival and although a few people had arrived at the same time they took their time to explain everything, as well as booking a time for dinner for us. The room was quite adequate with a comfortable king bed, bathroom was clean and a nice size, Our deal included 2 course dinner in restaurant and buffet breakfast which we enjoyed very much. The surroundings were very relaxing and cosy with the fires burning in the lounges. The only bad points of our stay were that our room was on third floor and with no lift we had to carry our bags up stairs, we were advised that a porter was available and asked if the stairs were a problem, which they weren't really just used to being able to use a lift. The second thing was the next room bathroom noises in the morning but with such an old house you can't expect everything to be perfect.

Room Tip: We were on third floor Elms wing if you have a problem with stairs make sure you tell them when boo...

I have just returned from a weekend away at Peppers Craigieburn, attending a good friends wedding. I am VERY surprised at the bad reviews here because my experience, and the rest of the wedding guests also, was wonderful! Yes the rooms are quite small, but the place is so lovely you don't spend a lot of time in the room anyway. The shower is good and strong, the bed comfortable. The breakfast is really good, the staff are all lovely and friendly and very helpful. I would definitely stay again, and will recommend it to my friends. It seems to be a popular place for weddings, so maybe if I was there just for a romantic weekend away, the large wedding group (which was us this time!) could be a bit annoying..

I dont usually write reviews but felt compelled to do so after staying at Peppers Craigieburn recently. This hotel is a hidden gem that has all the attributes of a country style retreat.
Welcoming staff, fantastic food, quiet & well groomed gardens & a feeling that you could be a million miles away from the pressure of the "BIG CITIES".
Yes admittedly the rooms were a bit pokey but it has to be considered with the age of the building & the reception staff were a little surly but we stayed for 2 nights & left feeling refreshed & revitalized. We also dined at their restaurant where Francesco (our attentive waiter) coupled with Executive Chef Warwick Brook created a dining experience to be savoured. I had the rib eye steak cooked blue (always a good test of a chef) that was faultless & my wife had the vegetarian open ravioli which was a burst of flavours. Finished our meal with a chocolate decadence plate which seemed to satisfy the choc-a-holic in me!
Hospitable through & through. We will definitely be coming back the next time we are in Bowral.

Room Tip: Ask for a balcony room

Dear Graheme j

Appreciate you taking the time to provide feedback on your stay with us.

Great to hear that you enjoyed your stay and I do have to agree our location is magic. The gardens are a tribute to our dedicated gardener and the fabulous food and service as you mentioned to Chef and his team.

Having been built back in 1887 the rooms as you mention are not large but definately well appointed and have comfy beds. Pleased to read you left refreshed and revitalized.

Look forward to welcoming you back sometime in the future.

Stayed here for one night with the wife as a romantic weekend away. It wasl great. The location is superb, just outside Bowral in the Southern Highlands. The Hotel is an old Homestead that has been renovated and extended. The room we had was small but modern and comfortable. We ate in the Restaurant at the Hotel and the meal was also excellent. I had the lamb which was very good and the wife had the steak. She said it was the best steak she has had in a long while. Hotel also has a small but adequate Gym and a Spa. Staff are friendly and efficient. Only issue is there are a lot of stairs if you are staying on level 3 (as we were) and there is no lift. So ask for a ground floor room if you can't get up stairs. Would stay here again.

Room Tip: Ask for a ground floor room if you don't want to use the stairs - there is no lift.
