“Lovely Modernised Cottage in a Great Cornish Village”
Reviewed 12 April 2015 for a stay in April 2015

We tried Thimble Cottage in Mevagissey in 2015 after visiting St. Mawes regularly for many years.

The cottage itself is marvellous - a large (for Cornwall) two bedroom (double and twin) fisherman's cottage over three floors, with kitchen/diner and bathroom on the ground floor, living room (with access to the rear terrace garden) on the first, and the two bedrooms on the top floor.

The place was decorated in a modern minimal style that worked very well in the context of a historic cottage. It was scrupulously clean, and the bathroom was very well done, with a shower stall large enough for three.

I was slightly put off by a pre-pay electricity meter that uses a "key" that you charge up for cash in the local convenience store. I had some anxiety over this, worried that either the lights would go out after the store was closed or that if I took the key out the fridge would go off, but I am pleased to report that neither happened (the meter "remembers" what was left on it while the key is out). I don't know what the advantage to the owner is of this system, but I suppose there must be one. It's the first I have seen in a rental cottage though.

Mevagissey is a classic Cornish delight, and very diffierent to St. Mawes. It's a mixture of genuinely bustling fishing port and tourist destination, with just the right balance of reality and tourist facility. Because it's just a little bit bigger it had a wide choice of pubs and restaurants, with the Alvorada Portuguese restaurant and The Fountain pub (ancient, and just down the hill from the cottage) deserving special mention.

I would definitely stay at Thimble Cottage again. If we do go back though we are going to have to come up with a better way of moving our kit to and from it. Vehicles cannot get near and at best you can stop (blocking a bit of traffic) to unload at the bottom of the hill and then hump it all up, reversing the process on departure. Not too much of a challenge if we had been with a third adult, but with two small children it became something of a logistical nightmare. What the cottage could really do with is one of those trolleys you find at marinas, but I can imagine the owners not wanting to spend that kind of money and in any case finding it difficult to store.

There were some nice touches. The bed in the double room was exceptionally comfortable and I am not looking forward to being back in my own tonight. The wood-burning stove in the living room was really good - easy to use and really essential for April evenings. It warmed the whole place in no time and was better than the new electric heating system installed thoughtout, and much more atmospheric.

Don't let that put you off going there with children though - ours (4 and 6) loved the cottage and the whole holiday and would have stayed if given the chance.

“Beautifuly restored harbour side cottage”

We had a really wonderful time at Thimble Cottage and in Mevagissey. Thimble was all we hoped it would be - a beautifully restored cottage, just the right size, a great view of the harbour, wood burning stove for cosy nights in - and Mevagissey was a totally new discovery for us. We loved that it is a very active working harbour and a thriving community. Everyone was so friendly and welcoming - and it has some great pubs! We even encountered the Mevagissey male voice choir singing at the Fountain after one of their rehearsals on Monday night and they were fantastic. We based ourselves in Mevagissey all week and barely got in the car - lovely walks out to Gorran Haven and vault beaches and other places. So all in all a pretty perfect way to spend Christmas - and we will be coming back!

Thimble cottage is a beautiful place, the scenery is breathtaking.
I try to stay at Thimble cottage once a year, there is so much to do from coastal walks, to lazing around in the garden/pubs.

Family friendly, great for a week long break or a walkers retreat. Thimble is so warm and feels like home, nicely sized bedrooms, within walking distance to the beach and mevagissey harbor.
