Who ever took the photos for the website of this hotel deserves some serious reward.

Yes the foyer to the hotel is nice and in keeping with Italian style. But once you step away from the foyer and get onto the floors, the lack of up keep becomes obvious. On the 2nd floor we were staying there had obviously been a leak in the ceiling at some point and tiles were missing. It was obvious to see that this was not a recent leak and they had just not repaired the tiles. This is not an image a 4 star hotel should want to be portraying I believe.

The rooms themselves are large enough, but again could do with some maintenance. There are scuff marks all over the walls and just general wear and tear. However, the bed itself is huge and comfy, although I found the pillows to be incredibly hard. You can order a pillow menu at an extra cost. The bathroom was very nicely done.

The grounds though are very well kept, although again the pool could do with some work. Apart from being bitterly cold (even in the middle of summer), there are holes appearing in the lining.

The staff were very friendly and helpful, recommending many places to visit and eat.

Breakfast was fine, but they could do with getting the staff to be more proactive with offers of coffee etc. You only seem to get one cup and that only happens when you track down the staff member.

This hotel definitely has potential (or perhaps had), but it is in need of some work.

We did have a good time here, but just felt we had been over sold the place by the great photos.

Would we return? I think so if we were to visit Certaldo again. The problems were cosmetic rather than staff or issues that could not be turned around.

We have just spent a week at Hotel Certaldo and had a lovely time - hotel was very nice, well appointed and rooms very large (there are several packages and we booked the "Pink Pepper" package which gave free coffee at bar, free mini bar and various local products incl a lovely bottle of wine (for both rooms we booked) on depature which was a nice touch. Breakfast was spot on, continental with a few hot options but this is a small hotel and it was just right for what anyone could need. The hotel does a simple evening meal and lunch option, which we had one night and enjoyed very much, with nice wines served.

The grounds of the hotel are attractive and although the hotel pool is small, it was a nice seating area. Some others on here have commented on lack of privacy from the road, but the hedges more than covered any views and we had no problems.

Location wise, brilliant - a 50 minute train from Florence, v close to San Gimignano and 90 minute drive to our favourite Lucca.

Locally, Certaldo has some nice restaurants, La Saletta was v good. In Certaldo Alto, some nice options as well. In Lucca we had a marvellous meal at Ristorante Gagnis, excellent food.

Hotel organised a wine tasting tour and evening with dinner via a local grower called Stefano - this was a great evening, some local sights and beautiful food cooked by Stefano in his farm and chance to taste and buy some great wines.

Finally, hotel staff are brilliant - best I have come across!

Well worth the stay and would go again for sure!

If you want to get away from it all this is the place.
The hotel is perfectly situated for Pisa, Florence and Siena.
The staff are the nicest, most friendliest, eager to please that we have come across on our travels. Nothing is too much trouble.
Rooms are big, beds are enormous!
The pool is small but never busy, sun beds enough for all.
Breakfast is lovely, a mix of hot, cold, pastries and cakes, coffee is really good.
Early evening drinks in the garden a good start before enjoying the lovely restaurants in the old town, make sure you book in advance they are popular. More traditional pizzerias in the new town, food fabulous but mostly eating indoors.
All in all a perfect holiday.
We will come back.

We loved this hotel as we wanted to visit Siena and Florence by train and it is perfect for both places. We were also central for touring most of Tuscany.
The rooms are generous and the staff ere very helpful. The place to eat is the old town, accessed by a railway line fir Euro 1.5 return. The staff will advise and book for you.
If you are driving the the hotel has plenty of parking.
There is a small pool and a few loungers. We did struggle to find shade around the pool.
The buffet breakfast is adequate and we liked it.

Hotel Certaldo was very comfortable and the staff were extremely welcoming, friendly and helpful. Our room was of a good standard and was cleaned daily. The quality of the breakfast was good although food choice was limited. The extensive hotel garden was well tended and beautiful with a small river running through it with a weir at the end.The swimming pool although small, was adequate to provide respite from the heat and after visiting the towns and cities.

The town of Certaldo was very picturesque especially the historic Certaldo Alto which was accessible via cable car at a return fare of 3 Euros. It was, however a bit disappointing as it was very not very lively. Whatever time we went there most of the shops were closed. There were very few bars most of which appeared to be shut all the time we were there which was 10 days. The restaurants were of good quality but many were shut on different days of the week and often the tables were reserved in advance even though they did not appear very busy. There is food available at the hotel itself but the menu is not very varied.
On a more positive note the train station is only about 5 minutes walk away providing regular easy access to the cities of Florence, Pisa and Sienna and the fares are reasonable compared to the UK. After you buy your ticket need to get it stamped before you board the train to avoid a 60 Euro fine.Stamping machines are on the platforms. Be aware that the last direct train to Certaldo is at 20.00. There are limited trains after this and the journey then involves changes at other stations and in some cases to buses. Time tables are available from the staff on reception. Overall we enjoyed our stay in Certaldo and would recommend it as a base from which to explore Tuscany.

Room Tip: All rooms are on higher floor and very quiet
