We stayed two nights at Mama Sara's, and it was really one of the highlights of our trip.

Mama Sara found on the street, when the hostel we had intended to stay in was full. Lucky us! She was sweet and kind, spoke Spanish slowly and deliberately (helpful given our limited command of the language), and treated us like we were her very special guests, not just another set of backpackers passing through.

The room -- two beds at $15 a night, a pretty great value in San Juan del Sur -- was quite basic but clean, with fans and clean shared bathrooms. It's the experience of staying with Mama Sara that made all the difference.

Upon arriving, she brought us refrescos. At other points in our stay there, she would surprise us with home-cooked meals (a great way to sample real local cuisine). She even prepared snacks for us to take with us on our trip to go see the turtles at night!

This was the first place we stayed at in Nicaragua, and although we stayed at nicer places later in the trip, we never stayed at a place that felt so much like a welcoming home again.

We came to San Juan del Sur just before the Easter week. Most of the more popular hostels had already been booked up. Good for us we found Mama Sara's house. A very warm and inviting Sara made us some ice cold lemonade while we looked at the basic, but clean room with a fan, cozy bed wifi and communal kitchen. The price was the cheapest we found for a double bed. We stayed for two weeks at Mama's and she was the best. She even made us food and fresh juice a number of times. The environment was social and mellow, def not a party hostel, but there is no curfew, so it's fine to go out at night if you want. We had a great time and would recommend Mama's to anyone staying in San Juan del Sur.
