Mama Sara House
Reviewed 18 November 2011

My boyfriend and I stayed at Mama Sara's after reading good things on the internet. The whole family lives downstairs (and Grandma two doors down) and they have got to be one of the nicest families on the planet. I agree with the other reviewers when they say this is "the most hospitable hostel ever" because it is definitely true. Mama Sara was constantly preparing us little snacks and juice, and Ramon (her son) and his dad were very helpful in steering us in the right direction with anything that we needed. We ended up going sportsfishing so we took Ramon with us and then Mama Sara prepared all the fish we caught for the next three nights. How nice is that!? Unfortunately I didn't take any photos of my room but the rooms were clean, basic, had a really good fan mounted on the ceiling, a wardrobe, and shared bathrooms (there were four rooms and two bathrooms). There is also a kitchen, balcony, living room, and they even let you do your laundry in a laudry room at the back if you want. One thing I noticed was that they keep their hostel very clean - the entire place is mopped down from head to toe every morning, the bathrooms are kept clean, and the trash taken out every day. This is definitely NOT a party hostel, although Mama Sara will have a beer with you. The price is excellent, you can walk to anything in town within two minutes, and you simply will never be able to beat the hospitality this family has to offer. It is simply THE best place to stay in San Juan. If I ever go back I will definitely be staying there again!

Room Tip: All rooms were about the same. You can't go wrong.

We stayed two nights at Mama Sara's, and it was really one of the highlights of our trip.

Mama Sara found on the street, when the hostel we had intended to stay in was full. Lucky us! She was sweet and kind, spoke Spanish slowly and deliberately (helpful given our limited command of the language), and treated us like we were her very special guests, not just another set of backpackers passing through.

The room -- two beds at $15 a night, a pretty great value in San Juan del Sur -- was quite basic but clean, with fans and clean shared bathrooms. It's the experience of staying with Mama Sara that made all the difference.

Upon arriving, she brought us refrescos. At other points in our stay there, she would surprise us with home-cooked meals (a great way to sample real local cuisine). She even prepared snacks for us to take with us on our trip to go see the turtles at night!

This was the first place we stayed at in Nicaragua, and although we stayed at nicer places later in the trip, we never stayed at a place that felt so much like a welcoming home again.

We came to San Juan del Sur just before the Easter week. Most of the more popular hostels had already been booked up. Good for us we found Mama Sara's house. A very warm and inviting Sara made us some ice cold lemonade while we looked at the basic, but clean room with a fan, cozy bed wifi and communal kitchen. The price was the cheapest we found for a double bed. We stayed for two weeks at Mama's and she was the best. She even made us food and fresh juice a number of times. The environment was social and mellow, def not a party hostel, but there is no curfew, so it's fine to go out at night if you want. We had a great time and would recommend Mama's to anyone staying in San Juan del Sur.
