“Beware”
Reviewed 3 November 2011

Attended a weekend conference. The meals were sub-standard even for hotel food. Dinner - Sit down - Service - extremely slow. Water pitchers were hard to get refilled. Coffee was not offered until dessert. The salmon and chicken were over cooked and hard. The side dishs were more of a version of home fries, the veggies were water logged and the salad was ok for iceburg lettuce but only ranch and italian dessings were offered. Breakfast - At 8:00 AM they were not ready to serve and a line had formed waiting to get into the banquet room. The fruit platter was gone by 8:30 and not refilled. There were no place settings and they ran out of clean spoons and water glasses. The only refills were scrambled eggs. The breakfast buffet cost $22.00 and dinner was $32.00. Conference rooms lacked water!

Room Tip: On the 3rd floor, elevator required room key to access, was the executive floor.

I have spent roughly 50 nights at this Holiday Inn, and I would say it is certainly ok.

The positives: It has a bar. Granted, during the week this bar is filled with lonely business travelers, but at least it's a bar. When I was there, you'd get a free drink if you were a priority club member. Most of my coworkers would bring their drink back to their hotel room.

The negatives:
It has that musty institutional Holiday Inn smell, that seems to occupy all of their hotels built around the late 70s and earlier. The rooms are recently updated with flat screen TV's, which are nice... but the rooms are in no way as nice as the ones at the Hilton next door. Especially with the loud old air conditioners/heaters that start and stop throughout the night. There is wireless internet, but it is quite slow.
I think 40% of the time I stayed there, they put me in a room on the 1st floor (basement) which allows folks in the courtyard to look directly into your room if you don't have the shades down. 70% of the time, my room faced into the courtyard, and the times that it faced out was toward the interstate. It wasn't loud, but nothing makes you feel like you're far from home like the sound of J-braking trucks late into the night.
During the few times I got a room on the top floor, there was a free breakfast, but it wasn't much to write home about. Similar to the free breakfast at other discount hotels - steam trays of food with some fruit, cereal, bread, and yogurt. Not bad, but I wouldn't pay extra for it.

Overall, it's definitely not the worst. It's a Holiday Inn, and there is a level of quality they keep with the brand. That said, I think the Hilton Garden Inn next door has consistently nicer rooms, better parking, and much more comfortable beds.

Room Tip: The rooms on the West Side or South Side are nicer, particularly the ones facing away from the court...

You will enjoy this hotel if you like to listen to loud, drunken parties in the rooms and halls all night long, especially on the weekends. Pub is often closed for private parties. Large parties are the specialty of the house.

Lobby was big and open, room spacious and clean. Bed was comfty. Bathroom was huge for a hotel. Has resturant and bar. Didn't eat there but I heard there was a great selection. Bar had an interesting crowd, was great for people watching. The diner across the street had the BEST breakfast. I'd stay again.

We were looking for an easy overnight spot that was comfortable and not too expensive. The hotel was very accommodating, clean, and the Sam Adam's bar was a very nice surprise. We had a long day with working and then 3 hours of driving. We got to the hotel expecting to have to hunt for a place to eat. The bar had a small but varied menu and a great beer menu. The hotel also had a nice touch for kids- a s'mores bar set up in the evening. Overall it was a pleasant stay and we would consider staying there again on our next trip through Allentown.
