“Amazing Place, Amazing Staff and Amazing Town.”

Hey everyone, I have stayed at Old Wheeler about 3 times and each time something new happens! I agree with so many that its like visiting your grandmothers house or mothers house. You are welcomed in by an amazingly down to earth owner Katie or another worker there Raine who is so up beat and friendly.

The rooms are great, clean as long as you dont show up early and start being pushy about getting into your room "right now" I suggest visiting some of the local antique stores or going up to Nehalem Bay Winery for taste while you wait for your room to be prepped and ready for you.

The Inn is done up nicely with period furniture. It really does make you feel like you are walking into a place in the early 1900's. Its warm and bright and has amazing views. A HUGE plus is it's quite. You can sit in the recreational room and read a book and look out over the bay where there is an island and sometimes it's packed with elk. Visit this location! Its a must!

Room Tip: Room 8 is new and really nice! 4 Has the jet tub! All of the rooms are really nice though so you ca...

A note to hotel proprietors everywhere - if somebody wants to check in early, there is a reason. They need somewhere to stick their luggage, they need to freshen up to be elsewhere, they need someplace to hang out until the next episode - they are not stupid and understand what a check-in time is, but probably something has gone wrong with their day. Something you can help with. So if you decline to help in any way, that would be bad service.

The hotel is charming, to be sure, with many vintage touches, and the shower was great (good water pressure, tall enough - these things matter more for kitschy). But the bed was comically soft - my girlfriend and I found ourselves trapped in the middle of it, nearly unable to escape.

Though not the hotel's fault, the water was not what I expected. The Nehalem Bay is across 101, then across a parking lot, then through some buildings - probably 100 yards away. It also isn't the ocean, or a bay as you might be thinking. It's a river. Somewhere just upstream of Wheeler they stop calling it a river and start calling it a bay, but there is no sound of the surf or anything. Certainly not unattractive, but not what I was expecting from the other reviews.

Hi Bill,

We were certainly thrilled to share our little spot on the Coast with you, and Cindy.

If I may address your point regarding early check-in? You may have noticed that we were full the evening you stayed with us. We have been quite busy, and that 3:00 check-in time allows us to get all of the rooms cleaned and set up for the incoming guests. We do our best to accommodate prearranged early check-ins, but chances are good that if a guest simply shows up early the room will still be in the process of being cleaned.
We do our utmost to make everyone's stay as comfortable and relaxing as possible, including providing a spotless room.

We did hear your complaint about the bed, and the mattress has now been replaced.

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your thoughtful feedback. It is important to us.

Warmest regards,
Raine

We loved loved loved the Old Wheeler Hotel. We were greeted so warmly and our room, I think was the best of the lot. The antiques made it seem like home. The breakfast room was so warm and comfy and so was our bed! This place is a gem! Our names were on our door (room #5) when we arrived making it seem like they were just waiting for us! The old elevator was an experience not to be missed and it was so much fun to look around the hotel. We hated to leave and both of us wished we could stay longer. Everything was so clean and decorated so nicely. I think it's a top quality place!

Room Tip: Room #5 faces the water and was near the music area. We loved the location of the room.

The Old Wheeler Hotel is a tiny gem on Orego's north coast. It's one of the few (only?) places to stay in or around the modest hamlet (pop. 300) of Wheeler, which is nestled at the back of scenic Nehalem Bay and almost at the foot of forested Mt. Neahkahnie.

My wife and I spent just one night there in late August 2011, but were blown away by the looks, the comfort, and the amenities of such a small hotel. The two-story building is a cheerful yellow on the outside, with a half-dozen hanging flower baskets decorating the front and side. Parking is plentiful and adjacent to the building, which is about as easy to find as you could get (it sits on Route 101). A small, customized welcome sign with our names was pinned to the door outside our room

Inside, the Old Wheeler is imaginatively done in mid- to late 1940's motif, with period antiques and throwback design. All of the amenities are up to 21st century speed, however, including DVD's, TV's in the room, and WiFi for guests. Our room was on the small side, but cozy and had enough room for a king-sized bed, a divan, end tables, and luggage racks. The bathroom was spacious and featured a tub as well as a shower. Soaps and towels were abundant and small touches (Q-tips) were appreciated.

Despite being on the 101, triple-pane windows and an alert local law enforcement keep road noise from being an issue. The hotel also provides ear plugs in every room, just in case. There is a common room on the second floor with a wonderful view of Nehalem Bay that you can view from a half-dozen comfortable couches and chairs. If the weather socks you in, there are books, board games, and binoculars with which to view the small fishing boats heading out or the elk on the nearby island.

Breakfast is continental, but generous, with hot beverages, yogurt, fruit, and cereals (self-serve). Everything was fresh and, again, small touches (the fruit is in a closed "fruit fridge" to keep it fresh) stand out.

You'd be hard-pressed to find a better spot to stop on the way down (or up) the coast: convenient, quaint, spotless, and cheerful.

My girlfriend and i fell in love instantly! We loved every room and the place is well put together. What I liked the most about the place is that it has the antique look with a new age style. We will definitely comeback. By the way, this review is 20 minutes into our stay so that goes to prove how amazing this place is.
