“Fun Birthday Trip”
Reviewed 8 April 2012

We took our Irish Setter and headed to the John Day Fossil beds for my hubby's 64th birthday. We arrived at Kahneeta near 6 PM. Had no problem locating the Village and checked in quickly. Our room was newly redecorated, lots of room for the 3 of us, big porch, lots of towels. Dinner at the Lodge was delicious, as was the breakfast buffet (fry bread with huckleberry jam is very good). I swam in the giant outdoor, steaming pool at about 9:30 AM. What a treat, so clean and well organized. Took dog on long walk along river. We could have easily spent a couple days here. It's pricey but so worth it in this part of the state. The staff were friendly and competent. We found nothing lacking. We enjoyed the Casino being located near the highway away from the resort activities. Brilliant idea separating them!

Room Tip: All pets stay at the Village.

The first bump was securing my online reservation for a suite... or so I thought... only to be called a few hours later and told they were overbooked and we were downgraded to a double King room. Check in at the Lodge was pleasant and the lobby has a very inviting fireplace, perfect for curling up with a book which I did later in the day. Our room felt very cramped with two king beds and the luggage of two adults and two teens. It seemed a little rundown - the bedspreads were worn and the decor was tired. The bathroom was very small but the shower (no tub) was larger than it first appeared. There was a lovely little balcony with beautiful views of the desert. The resort is nicely landscaped and clean. Second bump was at the mineral springs pool in the Village. I knew that admission to the pool was included with our room but we were not told that we needed to bring towels from the room otherwise they would need to be "purchased" at the pool! I've never heard of such a thing - BUY a pool towel at a hotel pool? So husband had to drive back up to the Lodge, get towels from our room, and drive back down to the pool while we waited. The pool was very nice - warm and refreshing. $4 charge to use the water slides. The 'family jacuzzi' was icky - lots of weird things floating in the water and it made my skin itch. Dinner and breakfast in the Chinook Room was jusk okay - rather high priced but it's the only option soooo.....

We would probably return but I would rather try camping in the tee pee's. The temps were a bit too cold for us to camp on this trip (50 degrees).

I've been to Kahneetah many times and always had a pleasant experience. I had a friend coming in from out of town, so wanted to take her somewhere special. I chose Kahneetah; bragging about their sumptuous breakfast buffet. When we got there, the Staff was outstanding, as always. They told us the Casino had moved. Hooray! The awful cigarette smoke is gone, gone, gone! I was excited to learn that the breakfast buffet was still offered. Yea! With incredible anticipation and empty stomachs, we walked the path to the restaurant for what I thought would be an enticing, generous, eye-catching buffet. AHHH! What we found was an anemic, thoughtless, artless, unappealing "spread" of breakfast items. The Carving Station, with their delicious roast beef & ham, gone. The beautiful display of fresh fruit, gone. The generous, perfectly done breakfast meats, gone. Even the cold cereal options were gone! The only thing left from the "old days" was the omelet bar. I strongly suspect that the pancakes and waffles were the frozen variety that they simply thawed and put out. NO flavor. And definitely no appeal. This is a SPA & RESORT! The food quality needs to be consistent! Their dinner options needs to be expanded, but was very good! Also, whose idea was it to remove the mini fridges in the rooms?!! I/we really did not appreciate that. It made our stay less convenient!

Room Tip: Most rooms have beautiful views as this resort is in the middle of nowhere!

This is my family's 12th spring break at this resort, and this is the first time we have come away feeling a little dissappointed. There were no activites (crafts, games, movies) for the kids. There were no activities (casino, comedy or music in the lounge) for the adults. The prices for EVERYTHING have increased and the services have decreased. Pool towels for guests are now $2 ... each. Our room price was twice what we paid the year before. The lodge casino has moved, along with the snack bar.
The staff was as friendly ever, but it seemed they were a little embarassed about the lack of services. "We are under new management," was the standard reply to our concerns about the dissappointing changes.
We will be watching closely to see if New Management finds a way to operate this resort in a way that maximizes their budget without breaking mine. Till then we, regrettably, will stay away.

I took my boyfriend away for one night at kah nee tah. Since this was a special occasion I made sure all the arrangements were made.

If you have a pet, you must stay down at the village rooms which are about half a mile from the actual resort. not close enough to walk. Also the casino is not at the resort. Down at the village, the pool was closed, the coke machine was broken, and the ice machine didnt work. Not impressed with the village whatsoever for a romantic night but at least it had a big balcony for the pup.

Food was amazing and the service was good. Wuld choose again for pet friendliness but not much else.

Room Tip: Don't stay in the village in winter.
