Quick visit. Doesn’t take long to see but so worth it if you are a fan of her books. Saw the house she use to live in and just made the stories I read as a child come to life!

The statues of Henry, Ramona and Ribsy are here to delight people of all ages! For this of us who read the books as children it's a trip down memory lane. It's also an excellent opportunity to introduce a new generation to the delights of Beverly Cleary's wonderful books about growing up in Portland's Grant neighborhood. Be sure to stop and enjoy this treat!

If the Beverly Cleary series have been part of their reading enjoyment then you must come to northeast Portland visiting Grant Park. It's the real neighborhood of Beverly Cleary and some beautiful Bronze Statues have been placed at the park they're child size and wonderful remembrances of her book's and the characters/people in her books. The park is a wonderful place for a picnic or just walk around the statues, there's play equipment close by perfect for a fun day!

The sculptures are displayed nicely in the park. There are water fo7ntains around them for the little ones to get wet. They had nice tennis courts and a public pool also in the park.

Finding the Location:

The best way we found the park was to use the “Beverley Cleary School”. It ended up taking us to the east side of the park. We walked from the west corner or the school further west, past the tennis courts and pool and found the sculptures.

Sculptures

There are three statues and then a bunch of bricks that have the names of books and a couple quotes on them. They are touching for anyone who has knowledge of Beverly Cleary.

Odds and Ends

** Take a picnic
**Take a Frisbee, tennis rackets, bathing suit
**There’s even a nice Football/Hockey/Baseball/Track area all in one if you want to just take a stroll.

I cam exclusively to see these sculptures of Beverly Clearly's characters from her children books. And they do seem to add a bit of live to the park. Tier are a sculptures of Henry Higgins, Ramona, and Ribsy the dog. On the ground there are carved stones that tell a little something about each character. I seem to fell that the best of the lot is Ramona who just looks so happy.

Henry Higgins is the scuplture that seems a bit jarring to me to look at. He looks so well dressed up. That it looks so out of place with how kids today dress. Which makes him look rather sharp, dapper and well to do. Wouldn't this be an excellent roll model for kids of today.

It is nice that Beverly Clearly has these sculptures in a park so close to where she used to live in a bungalow just three blocks away. It is located at 3340 NE Hancock. The house is currently on the market. And as far as I know, Beverly Clearly has been living in California since 2015.

I loved Ramona books as a child, so a stop by the Beverly Cleary Sculpture Park was a must while visiting Portland. It's a water exhibit with statues of Ramona, Henry and Ribsy, and is located in a nice, family park. It's a quick, park-and-walk-to exhibit or would be a nice place to pack a picnic and stay a bit.

I loved how Beverly Cleary's book titles were stamped in the bricks on the ground of the exhibit. It was kind of nostalgic to read the titles and to remember the books that I loved to read as a child.

Parking may be limited (street parking) small park with a play area for younger ones. Is more special when you have read many of Beverly Cleary's books

It's a nice little display of three life size figures: Henry, Ramona and Ribsy. Henry is scowling at Ribsy and Ramona because they are splashing in the puddles (A fountain water feature). My family loved posing for pictures with the statues and my kids loved the little playground with genuine teeter-totters. All the playgrounds we found in Portland had teeter-totters which really impressed my kids. Grant park also has a football field and a running track around it. Maybe that is because it is located right next to U.S. Grant high school. The neighborhood is very fancy and much more upscale and nice that i pictured in my head when reading the books.
