“Great location, nice amenities, perfect for our family”
Reviewed 26 May 2012

Our family (mom, dad, 7yo daughter) stayed at the Inn at Northrup Station over spring break, primarily based on recommendations from TripAdvisor. Once again, the recommendation did not disappoint.

The location was great, just a couple of blocks off of upbeat, funky 23rd Avenue. We ate at great restaurants either on or near 23rd three times during our stay, and all were great experiences (Papa Haydn, Besaws, Cafe Nell). The free streetcar tickets meant that anytime we wanted to head downtown, it was a short, free ride from the stop just outside the hotel. Yes, you can hear the streetcar rumbling past, especially from the street side rooms, but we decided that this was part of the urban atmosphere of the place, and didn't bother us at all.

Front desk stall were universally friendly and helpful, and the complimentary morning continental breakfasts more than sufficient to fill us up in the morning before we explored the city. The free parking was another bonus, as we did end up using our car on a couple of days (to explore Washington Park, and to go to OMSI).

Overall, this was a great experience; our only complaint (from our daughter) was the lack of a pool, but that was actually a bonus for us, as we didn't have to argue with her about whether to go and explore the town or stay at the hotel by the pool. :)

Room Tip: Avoid street side rooms if you are sensitive to noise.

A pool and spring break do go hand-in-hand, but isn’t your daughter a little young to be in college? ;) But in all seriousness, thank you so much for the kind review. We do strive to be universally friendly and helpful, as you said, and we’re glad you got to experience the hotel, the neighborhood, and plenty of other great Portland places. See you next time!

The rooms are a good size and contain a kitchenette. The Hotel offered free tram passes. They held a party for a solar eclipse which was top rate. One small quibble was that they rolled up the breakfast service at 9:30 rather than 10:00.

Wasn’t the eclipse amazing? It’s great that you were here for it! And with the exception of the waffle maker and mix, here’s a bit of a secret for all you Trip Advisor folks: if you ever miss breakfast and know what you want, just ask at the front desk. We’ll be happy to oblige. Cheers!

Our suite accomodation was huge! The king size bed was not dwarfed by the room; in fact, it had three more living spaces including a living area, a desk/office area, and a kitchen with full-size appliances including place settings for serving dinner. But why cook in the room with all those quaint shops in Nob Hill only steps from the hotel? Free parking is a plus in this area and the complimentary trolley passes were nice. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful, and the retro design throughout the hotel was obviously a point of emphasis. There was an even a complimentary wine tasting with hors d'oevres the night we arrived. Breakfast was satisfying and varied to suit all tastes. The only negative point has to be the sound proofing. Guests could easily be heard in the hallway and the room next door, as well as the trolley on the street below until the last trip at midnight. Overall though, this was a very nice stay in a convenient location.

So glad you were able to join us for one of our wine reception nights! We like to mix it up with fun events as often as possible, although we certainly understand that the hotel is where you typically end up AFTER going out and experiencing one or more of the many fun things that Portland has to offer. Thank you for the review!

Great hotel - decor was really cool and not your everyday, boring hotel. Staff was great and you can beat free breakfast and free parking. They also gave free passes for the street car - major plus! Next time I go to Portland I'll be staying here!

My visit to the Inn at Northrop Station was full of pleasant surprises. The location is great, in Northwest Portland, a bustling "yuppie" neighborhood with upscale shops and restaurants and quiet, tree-canopied streets. It's secluded enough to provide a cozy respite from a busy visit to Portland, yet close enough to the action that you're never more than a few minutes' drive away from the city's attractions. Parking in the hotel's lot is included for guests, though it's usually pretty full. However, I was able to find a space each night, even when returning to the hotel quite late. The hotel staff is very friendly and personable. The hotel and its rooms have a cheery, vintage/modern decor. The room my friends and I stayed in, a suite with two queen beds, was huge considering the nightly rate. Among other amenities, it included a kitchenette, small sitting area, two flat-screen TVs, a desk, and a large chest of drawers. There is also free wi-fi included with the room, though it seemed a bit slow the few times my friends and I tried to use it. Though our room faced the street on which the city tram operates, there was no perceivable noise. After several late nights on the town, everyone was able to get plenty of uninterrupted sleep.

Portland is such a pleasant city, you'll want to spend most of your visit out and about, enjoying the beautiful scenery, excellent cuisine, and bustling nightlife. However, even if you're only visiting for a few days, it's nice to have a comfy spot like the Inn at Northrup Station to come home to.

Room Tip: Call the hotel for the best prices and best available rooms. The room my friends and I stayed in, a...

What can we say that hasn’t been said in this review!? Thank you for giving fellow Trip Advisor-ens a glimpse of both the hotel and the many things to do here in Portland, which is most certainly a pleasant city, as you said. Any time you want to come back through our fair city, you know where to find us!
