A long-time Portland tradition, full of beautiful specimens and host to a fun concert series each summer. One of the best views of downtown Portland and Mt. Hood--take your camera.

“important garden beautifully situated”
Reviewed 1 March 2012

The Rose Garden, as locals abbreviate it, is a major display of the large variety of roses for which Portland has come to be known as The Rose City. It is part of Washington Park, a lovely greenspace in the West Hills, just a mile or so from downtown but ever so far in terms of ambience. Just a short walk from the Japanese Garden, the Rose Garden is a series of terraced rose beds which provide a spectacular array of color in early summer. It's a lovely place for a leisurely stroll, and for rose enthusiasts a major and important collection. Adjacent to the garden is an amphitheater in which musical concerts and productions are offered on warm summer evenings. Parking is convenient but limited, especially in season.

“A good example of why Portland is named the city of roses”
Reviewed 28 February 2012

The international Rose test gardens are a beautiful and free part of Washington park, nearby to the Portland Japanese gardens. Any time of year is lovely to visit, the view point from there of the city is really amazing. But going in the summer time when the roses are in bloom is a truly fragrant and fun experience for not only flower fans, but families as well. We like to take a picnic up there and after browsing through all the different variety of roses, sit and enjoy the quiet beauty. It's a wonderful stop to take anyone who's not familiar with the city of roses so aptly named, and definitely a must see for any visitor or rose lover.
