Stayed at the Benson for few days. Location is excellent. Staff are very attentive. Walking distance from lots of restaurants and coffee places. Would definitely stay there again!

First of all, the hotel is gorgeous. The lobby was a perfect place to gather, meet and socialize with our group. The service is impeccable. We especially enjoyed the service of the valet and doormen. Which brings me to one major drawback for this hotel, valet parking only and it's $31 bucks a night! You do have unlimited in and out services though.
The pictures on their website for the rooms are a bit misleading. They are small. The website shows the penthouse and suites. There is one pic of a regular room but it's a corner room so the extra window give it the feel of a larger room. On the bright side the beds are great! I had never slept on a Temperpedic so I was looking forward to it.
The restaurant in the lobby, The Palm Court, is very comfortable and the service again great. We were there around 10 am with the buffet going until noon. Hot items were not well stocked or warm. The fruit selection was impressive and delicious especially the berries, yumm. The waiter offered all of us OJ which we assumed was included in the buffet but no. We all had an extra $4 added to our tabs. This would have been nice to know. Mimosas were $8! Unbelievable.
But for those few exceptions our stay at the Benson would have been perfect. We really enjoyed ourselves.

Room Tip: Take advantage of the free shoe shine if you have leather shoes. You can get a fish for you room...

We just stayed for two nights at the Benson Hotel. Having tried a number of other Portland Hotels, we have some good points of comparison and, sadly, this hotel comes up extremely short. Issues:

1. Poor service. Overall weak caliber of personnel from the phone operators to the front desk clerks to the valets to the housekeepers. The valet service in particular is lacking. In fairness, when we requested our car to be brought around, it was always there very quickly. However, dropping it off was another matter. We weren't even sure they had valets we had to wait so long at first. Don't try to call the hotel for anything. The operator is not helpful and speaks with such a strong accent (from who knows where, doesn't matter) you cannot understand him.

2. Poor maintenance. The whole place needs a good cleaning. There were dirty finger marks on our doors, scuffs on all the wood surfaces, dirty carpets, dirty grout. Just a dark, dingy, dated feel to things.

3. Noise. There is some sort of engine that goes on and off all night/all day in front of the hotel. I have not idea what is was but the cycling on/off was difficult at night.

4. Calliber of guests. Folks out for a noisy good time. Beer cans left on hallway tables. Loud laughing in the hallways. Extremely large people in polyester lined up for anything free in the lobby (coffee, wine, etc). Very young, unsupervised kids playing in the revolving door and not asked to stop by hotel staff.

For the price charged, there are MANY other lovely, relaxing, high-quality, high-service hotels in Portland.

We love staying at The Benson. We can walk from the train station, and to just about anything in downtown Portland, or to Max lines. The hotel gives you old-world ambiance at a reasonable cost and the staff is excellent.

This entire sfaff was friendly and very helpful. Rooms and beds were very comfortable. My Mom and I had room service (breakfast) and the blueberry pancakes were the best I have ever had. Coffee was strong, could have been hotter. Loved the fact that the Presidents stay at this historic hotel. The lobby was beautiful. I will recommend this hotel to friends and family.
I will be back also. Thank you
