My family planned on taking a family trip to Newport so we could hit the aquarium and a couple of beaches, than make our way back up the coast. I made our reservations at the Shilo Inn based on the fantastic reviews. When we arrived we noticed there are four buildings. and one was much newer and nicer than the others three. Of course, we get checked into one of the older three. Whatever, we didn’t care...until we got into the room and saw really how outdated and unkempt it was. The first thing I noticed was the tube tv and wondered with all the money they bring in, the least they can do is put in updated tv’s. I mean it’s been what, 15 years of flat screens now? Anyway, the next thing I noticed was a lack of blankets and pillows, and it looked like the room cleaning hadn’t been completed. Stepping into the bathroom we noticed there were no towels and it looked like the floor wasn’t vacuumed at all. I went to call housekeeping and none of the preset buttons on the phone worked! I already was annoyed. The only thing that helped was the front desk staff was super friendly and fixed our immediate issues...unfortunately they can’t help with the work the place actually really needs. The pool area was dirty and falling apart, the stair corridors were blocked with filth and garbage bags while the cleaning staff did their thing (whatever that was), siding was falling off the building, light fixtures were broken. It’s just an overall eyesore and not a place I would recommend to anyone until they do some serious updating.

Two good things about this hotel: the people at the front desk are friendly and helpful and the view is terrific.

Everything else is bad.

The rooms are decrepit and look like they were furnished from Goodwill. The television is an old cathode ray tube set with channels that don't match up to what they say they are. The maids came in on our second day and emptied the trash and did nothing else. The rooms are furnished with one bath towel and one hand towel per person but no washcloths. Our rug had a whole worn in it and the foundation for the bed was stained brown on two different spots. Very unsightly and creepy. The stairs leading up to our room are covered with years of dirt and grime. Looks like the stairs have never been cleaned. The dining table in the room was partially cleaned with something like Pledge but there were two distinct complete handprints left in the polish and they missed about a third of the table. If I'd had a washcloth I would have washed the table before using it. Ended up using wetted toilet paper.

We don't care about the friendly staff and the nice view, we will not stay here again or recommend it to anybody.

Unusual for us, but this is a very mixed review. Shilo has been consistently solid for many previous trips, but this location needs a lot of help. It WAS CLEAN, sort of, but shows evidence of drastically reduced staff and maintenance. The bed was clean and comfortable. The 4th floor view looking directly over the beach was one we'd normally die for! Overlooks very picturesque flat beach with a few very old driftwood logs along the berm, enough for a couple of families to have an afterdark bonfire. SMORES available at the registration desk for the unprepared. Surf during our stay was mild even with strong winds.

Check-in went well but as expected a few minutes after 4pm quite a lineup at the registration desk. Staff very courteous and check-in went well.

Absolutely NO information material in room (phone book, local map, on-site restaurant menu, hotel phone directory, etc.). Room had kitchenette but minimalist dishes & utensils...enough for TWO.

Unfortunately, large puddle of a coconut oil discovered under and around base of bedside table lamp, almost like the lamp leaked it. We placed paper towels under lamp to soak it up, but maid totally ignored it for 2nd day morning room service.

Hotel restaurant on lobby level of our building, but again understaffed. Bartender Joel was doing yeoman's work running around to bartend and provide table service. Joel was the highlight of our minimal dining experience. We were leary so only ordered boneless chicken wings. Veggies on plate (celery & carrots) were pretty limp. Again, the VIEW was superb and the ambience certainly quiet!

Room rate was a bit on the high side, but this was the Thur & Fri before Easter & Spring Break.

Room Tip: Our Bldg- 3 of 4 - covered under building parking
