We visit the Oregon Coast every Easter and this is our second time visiting Heceta Head. I haven’t toured inside her, but we’ve been inside her twin, Umpqua River Lighthouse. The grounds are just as gorgeous as the lighthouse. It has a first order Fresnel lens and was lit 3/30/1894. The assistant light-keeper’s duplex building is now a bed and breakfast.

The Haceta Lighthouse is a great stop on the Oregon Coast. From the parking lot (cost for parking- $5 in March 2018), there is a beautiful 1/2 mile walk slightly uphill to the lighthouse. The walk is through the forest, with sea views- it is beautiful!. The lighthouse is very interesting, with tours of the first floor. It is small, so the tour is small. Good history lesson on the lighthouse.

We spent a morning visiting the beach and the lighthouse. I enjoy the ambience of lighthouses on the coast, but I'm not a lighthouse enthusiast. Mostly, since lighthouses sit high up on bluffs overlooking the ocean, they are good places for views. Heceta Head (take your pick of pronunciation) sticks out into the ocean, with several sea stacks protecting a beach with lava rock at the north end, and sand at the south end. The view can be spectacular.
After doing a bit of beach exploration, and the tide coming in, we climbed the footpath past the light keeper residence to the lighthouse, passing through weatherbeaten spruce trees and Salal bushes. For an 80-year-old, the climb was not difficult.
In my youth, living near Tillamook, Heceta was pronounced "heck-et-a." These days, locals seem to prefer the Spanish pronunciation, "heh-see-ta."
The conundrum with the Oregon coast is that best wave action is when the wind is howling and the rain stabbing in sideways. Most comfortable visits are when the wind is down to a gentle breeze and the sky is blue.
The lighthouse is open to visitors most days, at posted mid-day times. The walk on a gravel pathway can be done in street shoes.

Except for Haystock Rock at Cannon Beach, Heceta Head Lighthouse is perhaps the most iconic image of the Oregon Coast, appearing on countless calendars, coffee mugs and t-shirts. It's well worth seeing in person, despite the short walk from the parking lot--a glimpse at how Europeans traversed this wild shoreline the era before satellite-guided navigation. The lighthouse itself has been beautifully restored, and the guided tours (first level only) and gift shop are first rate. But the real attraction is that epic view to the west. Take a picnic; take a picture; take as much time as you need.

As you drive along Hwy 101, you get many views of this beautiful well kept lighthouse. We enjoyed having an up close view, but unfortunately the weather turned and our visit was cut short. The view over looking the ocean from the. Lighthouse is breathe taking as well.
