This is the last gas and water stop for many, many miles. So the food and service are really a seller's market. Nonetheless, both were outstanding. People here are very friendly and the burgers and shakes are excellent. This place is worth the stop even if you don't need gas or aren't really that hungry.

Spent 2 nights here while on a long desert drive of 1600 miles. Having gas, food, and small store is really a lifesaver when you're this far out in the sticks.

Be sure to book your room WAY in advance. We had 1 of the 2 rooms nearest the store. Each of those has 2 bedrooms, so you could easily put 4 people up. The rooms have pretty good fridges. I had a take out milkshake up and it would fit in the freezer upright. Really helpful to re-freeze ice packs, etc. Coffee pot in the room with the sealed filter coffee bags. Not bad (once you're out that far into the sticks, your standards re: food drop a bit). The scenery and wildlife make it all very worthwhile.

One thing that we world travelers found quirky is that there's no confirmation that you have a reservation. Nothing by mail, email, no confirmation #, etc. I called a couple times just to be sure and was told that if they had our credit card number on file, we were all set. Turned out that was the case, but nonetheless, one is a little apprehensive when it's the only motel in town.

Grill closes at around 3:30pm. You can get milkshakes (around 20 flavors and BIG) after that, but no cooked food. In fact, if you travel to this part of the state, you really should have a 12V cooler full of food. We did and probably ate a dozen meals out of it in 7 days.

Linens ok, shower's a little small (constantly pulling the shower curtain off your back), but it's fine. Lots of mosquitos this time of this particular year anyway. One fun thing was watching cars pull into the driveway and seeing the 2 resident magpies immediately race up and chew up the big grasshoppers that were stuck in the bumpers! LOL!

As far as the personnel goes, two gals, Jordan and Tiffany, were really great! There were two other gals who seemed a bit bothered when we asked a question. We had a blowout and sort of got the "so what" from one of the gals when we asked if she knew anyone who could fix it. But, it's the only show in town and we've got plenty of friends. (But thanks, Jordan and Tiffany!)

Tips: 1. Try to get either room 1 or 2. 2. Drive out to the Alvord Desert at sundown. We drove right down onto the lake and it was REALLY something. Just the sound of the wind and from where we were, we couldn't see anyone in any direction. 3. If you decide to take the drive to Virgin Valley in northern Nevada to check out the opal mines, drive that gravel road VERY slowly. The road was made with some very sharp rocks, which caused our blowout. We ended up driving 200 miles on our doughnut spare. 4. And in that vein, before you travel, make SURE your spare is in good shape! Also carry plenty of water (we had 10 gals for 2 people), motor oil, antifreeze, tools, etc. 5. If you decide to cut over from Fields to Plush by going back up north and turning west, be aware the road is like a washboard in some spots, especially around the Hart Mt Antelope Refuge Hdqtrs. But great wildlife viewing. We had considered it, but at that point, we had to get to Lakeview to get a new tire. If you do this, you'll never forget the vistas, animals/birds, and isolation. And we met some great people, too!

Sandy and Naomi were super-nice and stoked about their new bar and micro-brew taps they had put in, and I was stoked that I received a huge portion of 3C's milkshake. Blows my mind they made 6,300 of them last year! Fun merchandise, will get a burger next time-- roads were good for February but Frenchglen and Steens Mountain Road were not yet open.

No fancy stuff, just good, solid, wholesome, and friendly. May take a bit for the burger, or breakfast, but you can watch the cook, and talk to her and the other staff, but don't distract the milkshake maker. Their growlers are unique. Good attitudes are rewarded, bad ones are tolerated to a point. Been here twice; will be my preferred route to Winnemucca now rather than Jordan Valley.
