“Lookin' good August 2017”
Review of Bagby Hot Springs

Reviewed 9 August 2017

We were there from sunset till 11 pm on a warm August night. Path was well-maintained. Easy 45 min hike from parking lot. Upon arrival, the only other person was an older naked man in the communal area. He was smoking and had candles lit. (I get the feeling that the rules, unfortunately, are broken regularly). My partner and I soaked in the one of the private tubs. The temp was perfect. They do supply buckets and a cold tap if it gets too hot. We didn't notice much trash, although we were there in the dark. The outhouse had a toilet paper dispenser, but it needed tp. Later at night, a family with young kids came, and after that, a group of young men. Everyone very friendly, but smoking pot there seems to be the norm. I recommend bringing a plastic bag to take out any trash that others carelessly left behind because this is a beautiful place that I'd like to show my future grandkids!

We made the mistake of not calling the ranger station in Estacada before we arrived. Make sure that you call before you go. The structures and tubs at Bagby were damaged during the heavy snows of 2016/2017. The trailhead parking lot is still snowed in the last week in March. And you can see there is heavy trash and needles in the area where the Tweakers seem to have invaded. When we did check in with the forest service they told us the same and said that there would be a cleanup and a safety inspection and repairs done at the site. Sorry friends, but don't go without checking if it's finished.

I have been to Bagby Hotsprings three times and I remember when it was quaint. The hike was absolutely wonderful but the log tub area was awful. As the last one of the open four bays it took about 45 minutes to fill the tub 1/2 way since the uphill tubs got virtually all of the hot water. While it was once quaint it is now reminiscent of a pig-sty. They should use the $5 pp access fee to refurbish it. Even the fifth tub had rotted out. If you go skip the log tubs and use the communal tubs.

this was a day stop that turned into a longer than planned area stayover. When we got there it was very easy to find the trail and get to the springs. An excellently maintained trail through a great old growth forest mostly along a creek gave the kids lots to keep them excited, especially with a hot springs as the ultimate destination. At the springs we did not realize there are actually 3 separate areas, visit the official bagby site for a little more info. What started as a formal line quickly turned into a free for all as more and more hikers arrived. We then found out that people wait in line at the private tubs only and the others are considered more communal. It was interesting how many were first timers(even though a lot said they had been in oregon for years)and those who were return visitors had not been for a long time. Being from WA state it is not super convenient, but we will be back. Everyone there stayed in suits. The facilities are not very well maintained, even though the park service is collecting fees (to maintain the springs). Some of the pipes are no longer working and at least one of the private tubs is completely destroyed. We paid in the parking lot with an envelope and upon returning to the car, the camp host was just about to give us a ticket because she had not checked the pay station to verify that we had paid(didn't make much sense to us). This can probably be avoided altogether by buying a forest pass beforehand and making sure it is hanging in your window.

We loved the hot springs! And the walk through the forest to get there is lovely too! There were, as expected, a fair few naked folk, chilling (or warming, I guess) in the communal area, and it's never the ones with the Calvin Klein or Victoria Secret bodys that wanna show off. We just stayed In the cubical bit round the corner. It was great!
