We had been following the river for a while and then drove along to the river head which is a spring. Great scenery and lots of interesting things to see.

You can see the origin of this Wild and Scenic River at an overlook where the water pours out of the side of Black Butte, and then go into Camp Sherman to pick up a hiking trail that takes you along the spring fed river for miles... or pick up bits of a the rvierside trail at the several campgrounds with drive-in access. In some areas you'll see other people, but even fairly close to Camp Sherman, you'll find yourself with lots of privacy to enjoy the river and neighboring Ponderosa pine forests. Between Camp Sherman and the headwaters, the riverside trail is for foot traffic only.. Horses and mountian bikes restricted to trails further inland of the river. This may be true on other sections of the river. If you do go into the forest, abide by requests to stay off areas in restoration and keep and eye out for poison oak.

This is a wild river and it is beautifully preserved.

The hiking along the river is some of our favorite terrain. Beautifully forested, soft duff trail right along the shore.

Even if you don't fish ( and we don't) this is still a wonderful place to visit.

Hiking along the Metolius River after a light snowfall is magical. There is a nice out and back four mile walk starting at the Camp Sherman general store. Well marked paths. Great views of the forest and Black Butte.

Every time I come to Central Oregon I always stop here, as I have been doing for over 30 years. Its a serene place, beautiful and well maintained. Oh and if you bring peanuts the chipmunks will literally come out and take them from your hand. Its quite a show.

We went to the head of the Metolius River which flows out of a hillside. From the parking lot it is a relatively short walk along a paved path. There is no access to the river itself from this location. To get to the water you need to go to Camp Sherman. But, the views of the river are beautiful and you can see the snow capped mountains in the distance.

Well this place was fun, after parking your car at the head of the Mitolius, there is a short walk to the actual head of the river that comes from the center of the Earth. You can see all these chipmunks in the summer playing around with you curious for food. Then you can see the river coming from the ground and all this water running down hill. Then you can make a stop at Camp Sherman and it is all so full of nature. Amazing place. Magical.
