My daughters and I had a wonderful stay at the Second Street Cottage.
Don was a great host, and the cottage had everything we needed.
It was also a quick walk to the lovely downtown area with shops, cafes, and
restaurants.

Thank you for the five-star review. I am glad you mentioned that the Cottage is a quick (4-5 minute) walk to downtown Bend. It is this close proximity to downtown and the secluded nature of the Cottage which make it unique. Marline and I try to anticipate the needs of our guests and provide numerous amenities seldom found in other short term rentals. Glad you liked what we do. Come see us again.

“WORTHY OF TEN STARS!”
Reviewed 28 October 2015 for a stay in October 2015

If you are searching for the BEST that Bend has to offer, LOOK NO FURTHER!
We enjoyed a 9-day stay at the Second Street Cottage during a fortunate stretch of glorious autumn weather. Beautifully decorated and meticulously clean, this was our "home away from Home" and truly the nicest accommodation we've ever enjoyed while visiting Oregon!!
Don and Marline are gracious and accommodating hosts, thoughtfully providing every possible amenity - and then some!
From the cozy and comfortable interior to the BEAUTIFUL and secluded backyard with patio and BBQ, this place is a delight. Don even took the time each morning to sweep the new-fallen leaves from our patio! And he was readily available to offer suggestions or recommendations for activities and restaurants in Bend or surrounding areas (and even a great shoe store!) when we inquired. Every aspect of this well-tended cottage and it's host/owner is EXCEPTIONAL. We look forward to returning as soon as possible!!!

WOW! Thank you for taking time to review your stay in the Second Street Cottage. We did use the professional services of an Interior Designer when furnishing and decorating the Cottage. All furnishings were purchase new specifically to fit the space and complement one another. Marline and I pride ourselves in providing an absolutely spotless ?home away from home?. Importantly, we also strive to provide a safe environment for our guests. All fire and life safety devices are inspected before new Cottagers arrive and are tested at least monthly. A year or two ago, we even asked the City of Bend Fire Department Fire Marshall to inspect the Cottage and grounds. And sweeping the leaves?well, it helps them from being tracked into the Cottage?a win-win. Having lived in Bend and central Oregon for many decades, we know the area and the roads / trails less traveled. When guests tell us what they have seen of previous visits to the region, we can easily offer new ?adventures? for them to experience. Please do come back again and enjoy our secluded oasis just a 4 minute walk to downtown.

“A Hidden Gem in Bend!”
Reviewed 17 September 2015 for a stay in August 2015

The 2nd Street Cottage is wonderful, and I’ll definitely return. Don and Marlene have made this one of the most thoughtfully and best appointed VRBO rentals I’ve ever found. As Don said, guests shouldn’t have to spend their time shopping for needed items. The kitchen has many details, from a French press, coffee grinder, teapot, grapefruit spoons, all utensils, cookware, spices, olive oil, honey, cloth placemats and napkins, scissors and scotch tape, and four to-go coffee thermoses. What a nice surprise to find a wooden box of Stash tea selection for non-coffee drinkers. Off insect repellent is available for use alongside the complementary forest pass. The bath has all of the little amenities/toiletries you might need. Environmental consideration was apparent throughout. Two Yoga mats, iron and ironing board are in the closet for your use. The décor provides a warm, friendly and peaceful environment, and the private patio is serene and beautiful, surrounded by garden greenery. Battery-operated candles are available to create ambiance in the sitting area, and wall outlets are all in the right places for technology chargers. The bath, bedroom and kitchen are enhanced by natural light from skylights. A window A/C unit can be added when needed, but the ceiling fans in both the general living area and bedroom help move the air from the many screened windows and screened door to the patio on cool mornings and nights. The single-care parking spot on the alley is paved, and outdoor motion sensor lights are helpful at night. Less than a quarter-mile walk to downtown, and a half-mile drive to access the highway, makes this a perfect location for exploring all Bend and the surrounding area has to offer. Don sends daily texts or email with tips on happenings in and around the area, and just to check in on your comfort and needs. Thanks for a great stay!

Thank you for taking the time to write such a detailed review. Your review mentioned the wall outlets in all the right places—great observation. Not only are all the outlets GFI protected, many of the outlets are 4 gang (read 4 plug ins each). Above the bathroom sink and kitchen countertop there are 6 outlets each. Many of the wall outlets are also 4 gang; plenty of places to plug in chargers and computers. Natural light from the skylights in each room enhances the open feeling of the Cottage. A retractable blind is on the bedroom skylight for those wanting less light. Cottagers can adjust all of the window blind ( bottom up, top down ) for desired natural light and privacy. Many find the grounds so private they leave the blinds open on the French door so they can enjoy the garden views. If a guest expresses interest, we will offer suggestions on activities/events. The Cottagers’ set the tone for how much or little communication they desire. Of course we are always available to immediately correct or repair anything that requires attention. We want the stay to be more trouble free than one expects in their own home. After all, the Cottage is our traveler’s home, whether for just a few days or months at a time.

“Clean, Quiet and Comfortable”
Reviewed 9 August 2015 for a stay in July 2015

The cottage was so comfortable and peaceful that we ended up staying an additional night beyond the 3 nights we originally booked. The location, in a neighborhood very close to downtown, is surprisingly quiet. We enjoyed evenings in the back yard surrounded by lovely gardens. It was a short walk to downtown and Galveston Ave brewpubs and an easy drive to locations farther afield for hiking, etc. Don was a great source of information and was always concerned that we were enjoying ourselves and had everything we needed. The cottage is very well-equipped, including a variety of condiments and all the cooking equipment and utensils you might need. We plan to return to this cottage and would highly recommend it to others.

Thank you for mentioning the peacefulness of the Cottage and grounds. Since the Cottage is only a 4-5 minute walk to downtown, we are often asked if the neighborhood is quiet (?). That is such a subjective question to ask someone who has lived on the property decades. We think it is quiet and your testimonial affirms our beliefs. And yes, the kitchen is fully stocked with nonperishables. We think providing the “basics” (probably more than some have in their own kitchen), we save our guests time and money. What a waste to buy a spice or condiment one might only use once and then discarded upon departure? Please do come see us again and perhaps be surprised. We change out bedding and even some art work to reflect the seasons and holidays.

“Our Second Time at Second Screet”
Reviewed 4 July 2015 for a stay in June 2015

This is our 2nd straight year staying in the Second Street Cottage and we enjoyed both experiences very much. To begin, Don is easily the best and most accommodating host that we have stayed with during our ventures out to the PNW. He is always there to greet us with a couple of beers and a special surprise in the fridge. Don has given us tons of information on the area and a multitude of personal advice, we feel as though he is like a friend to us. The cottage is quiet, secluded and the backyard is beautiful. Everything is clean, well kept, and well stocked with all of the necessary condiments, teas, coffee, etc. that any vacationer would need on a trip out to Bend. Furthermore, the cottage is in a pristine location, only a very short walk from beautiful Drake Park and the Deschutes and the restaurants and shops of downtown as well as a quick walk down to up and coming Galveston and all of the activities there. The Second Street Cottage made both of our visits to Bend feel more personal, and I genuinely couldn't imagine visiting bend without staying here! Don's beautiful property might even have convinced us to move toward the area as well! Don, Marline, and the cottage have been amazing for the past 2 years and we hope to return again sometime soon.

Thank you for your thoughtful review. Prior to arrival, we try to ask what a guest is interested in doing and seeing. Then we can provide suggestions even before arrival. It gives the traveler, especially those coming to Bend for the first time, a leg up. And if a Cottagers invites interaction with Marline and I, we are happy to engage. Having lived in central Oregon over 40 years, I can suggest the paths less traveled for those who want to escape the crowds.
Many of our past guests have actually turned into good friends and several have subsequently relocated their families to Bend. We are blessed with much repeat business; a honor and trust we do not accept lightly. Whether one wants to get away to a secluded property or be in the hub of downtown Bend, the Cottage offers both ends of the spectrum.
