We recently visited Calavera’s before going to a movie at Circle Cinema. We arrived fairly early and there were a few people there; however, as it started getting closer to the movie start time more and more people started arriving. When you arrive you seat yourself, get your menus and then go to the counter to place your order. There is a salsa bar with several types of salsa ranging from mild to fairly hot along with additional items such as onions, lemon, etc. You are given a paper container of chips when you place your order, they are not served at the table as is common in other Mexican restaurants. They have a limited selection of beer and Pespi products. The salsas were freshly made and very flavorful. We all decided that the roasted salsa was our favorite.
I ordered the Chile Relleno which was an egg battered roasted Poblano pepper filled with queso fresco, served with rice and beans and covered in ranchera sauce. My husband ordered the Wet Burrito which had mixed meats (his choice) rice, refried beans, salsa, jack and cheddar cheese, covered with salsa, melted jack and cheddar, sour cream and guacamole. Our friends ordered the California Seafood Quesadilla which came with spinach, artichoke, mushrooms, onion, bell peppers and shrimp and the Fish Tacos which came with perfectly grilled fish, creamy chipotle sauce, pickled cabbage, pico de gallo, jack and cheddar cheese with a side of rice and beans.
The Chile Relleno was very lightly battered and fried but I thought the ranchera sauce was a little overpowering. The Wet Burrito was huge and could easily have been split between two people. The meats were grilled and had a little bit of “bark” on them which made the texture and flavor wonderful! The quesadilla was very, very good and I’ll probably order that on our next visit. The fish tacos came with large slices of avocado and, again, was enough for two people. I didn’t try them, but they looked delicious and our friend said they were delicious. We also ordered sides of queso and guacamole which were both delicious.
The service was friendly and our entrees arrived very quickly. A server brought our entrees to the table; however, that’s the only time you’ll have a server. If you need drink or salsa refills you’ll need to get it yourself.
We will be making Calavera’s a regular stop when we need our Mexican food fix. Next time we’ll know to only order one entrée or be prepared to take home ½ of our dinner for another time. Good service, great food and very reasonable prices will keep us coming back!
