We have visited Great Wolf Lodge resorts in Kansas City, the Poconos (twice), Grapevine (twice), Mason, OH (3 times), and Concord, NC since 2005. On our last trip, we encountered some issues that were well handled by management. They were very kind and gracious. Next to Disney, this used to be one of our favorite vacation spots. However, the overall condition of this location has deteriorated considerably since we first started staying here. With that said, our family had a good time together but it took an incredible amount of effort to over look some things in order to make the best of our situation. Despite the following problems, I will say that the staff were incredibly kind, but I think it's only fair to warn other customers that the current condition of this location is not at it's best.
On our first night, we found this bug in the sofa bed which appears to be a bed bug. We were moved to another room immediately and offered quarters for the dryer to expose any remaining pests to the heat to kill them. (We decided to use the trash bags that they offered us to bag up our items and leave them in our car to be exposed to the heat of the car during the following day since temperatures in a car can rise to those above the average dryer.) We immediately inspected the next room and found several pubic hairs under the sheets of two of the beds on the sides of the mattresses. I personally went to the front desk three times to obtain the correct size sheets, but were continuously given the wrong ones. By 2 am, I gave up. We were given another room the next day that was given a VIP cleaning and was immaculate. Our children were also given arcade cards, which they enjoyed tremendously. (The pest control expert said that he found no evidence of bed bugs, but could not confirm or deny what the bug was that we found. ) I do feel the management made their very best attempt to ensure the remainder of our stay was a pleasant one. Once we finally got to use the water park, we noticed a tremendous amount of algae on the Hydro Plunge water slide. The Totem Towers and floors near this area also had algae. The showers were filthy. We immediately turned around and went to our rooms to rinse, (but it takes a long time to wait for 5 people to shower). The stairs leading up to the highest slides were very rusted and one stair was loose at the very top, which is unsettling and hopefully cosmetic and not structural. The carpet in the arcade was filthy. Again, these are issues beyond the control of an assistant manager. These are maintenance issues that could not be fixed on this trip. We won't be staying at any other Great Wolf Lodges because it is impossible to find out the condition of the resort prior to arrival.
If you are going, not to worry. It's all about your attitude. Despite the algae, I told my kids, it's still cleaner than a lake. The arcade was a lot of fun. The food in the Lodge Wood Fire Grill was good. There were baby ducks that visited our room and a mother duck that looked in our door. At night, you could see the fireworks from King's Island if you have a view of the water park. Scoops is as adorable as ever. Dunkin Donuts was great in the morning, but arrive early.
