It was a long day travelling here from Melbourne. Goining via train from Flinders we got to Werribee to find the only bus to the zoo departed at quarter past the hour every hour so we had 45 minutes to wait.

It's a short journey to the zoo only to be told that we had missed the safari bus and the next was an hour away. More waiting.

But the safari trip is the best part of the visit to the zoo. The driver is informative and the 40 minutes goes real quick. We got some real close up encounters with rhino's and giraffe.

The buses depart 5 past the hour every hour until 5pm so by this time it was time for us to depart and wait for the late arriving bus.

Hint: on the safari get in the first wagon unless you like to eat dust. Also the driver stops with the first wagon in mind not the other two.

Secondly the bus to the zoo goes via the rose garden. It's possible to get it confused with the zoo. Signage is poor and there is no assistance from the driver

I have been to this zoo many times (excursions with the school kids) and every time I go there with hope! But enough is enough yesterday was the last straw! There was literally only 4 animals on display for the whole zoo!!! The monkeys were not there which is normally the kids favourite! After all the walking to get to the parrot enclosure YET again no parrots on display. Gorilla enclosure was also closed and we could only see the gorilla from afar poor kids barely saw anything. There is not enough animals at this zoo to walk and see. The many times I have visited, which is a lot, I have only ever seen the cheetah once or twice. 1 Cheetah for years now come on. It is so boring the only animals we saw were the lions and the meerkats. The African wild dogs were asleep and so were the hippos. This is not the first time this is happening all other times I have visited most enclosures are closed or the animals aren't around. The only thing this place has got going for them is the Safari Bus. Wouldn't recommend anyone to visit.

Hi fulya3,

Thanks for taking the time to share your experience. We are sorry to hear that you missed out on seeing all of the animals during your visit.

As an open range zoo one of our objectives is to ensure that the animals in our care have lots of space and a natural environment, with trees and other areas where they can shelter and rest.

At times animals may also be off display for health checks, veterinary procedures or cleaning and renovation in their exhibit or during extreme weather such as high wind, rain or when it’s very hot.

It’s also very important to us that our visitors are able to see the animals and learn about conservation efforts to protect wildlife and so we’re disappointed to hear of your experience.

The Safari Tour and the daily Keeper Talks are a great way to see animals up close during a visit to the Zoo.

Our Orange-bellied Parrots are on display, but as a ground-dwelling parrot with great camouflage it can take some time to spot them. They do tend to be more active in the morning, which can be a good time to visit.

Kind regards,
Zoos Victoria

My wife and i spent the day at the zoo were we went on a safari tour and then walked the grounds. We really enjoyed the gorillas and lions. We stayed at the werribee Hotel Mansion and Spa. It was a bit of a cold day so some of the animals were not to inclined to come out such as the meerkats

I've been several times, but this time I went for a class excursion. We did the bus tour and got to have some talks with the zoo keepers which was insightful. As usual, the animals were napping, which is totally understandable considering they are ANIMALS, not circus attractions. All in all it was a great day.

I stayed here recently with my family as part of their slumber safari program. I wasn't sure the cost was worth it prior to booking but I am very glad I did it.

They have put a lot of effort into creating a lovely experience for all guests. The staff that were helping that night were truly wonderful. They were so knowledgeable and happy to answer any questions we had about wildlife in the area or nature in general. The food was magnificent. You could tell they've put a lot of effort into going beyond basic service

The area itself was overlooking an area with kangaroos and emus. The African animals were much further in the distance. We could hear lions roaring at night. The accommodation itself was lovely but it gets incredibly cold, even with the electric blankets. Also, you can hear the traffic through the thin walls of your tent. I bought earplugs and extra clothes and slept fine.

The real highlight for me was the behind the scenes animal experiences. This was beyond what you could get, even as part of the paid wild encounters. We got to see the hippos get fed in the morning and the bond they had with their keeper. We saw a cheetah have her second ever kangaroo tail. We got to take our own time in the private safari and see just how keen giraffes are to get fed. It was fascinating.

I also enjoyed hearing about the passion the keepers have for conservation and how the zoo has evolved over the years. I'm very glad I went.
