Good lord

3.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 4 Jan 2012
What appears to be a lovely little cottage is indeed quite neglected and poorly presented. Broken windows in bedroom, no lightbulb in lamps, milk crates for chairs in courtyard, microwave in the loungeroom, cheap towels, zero (and I mean none) condiments, butter, breakfast provisions, no coffee, a few old tea bags, crappy kettle. But the highlight was the large bags of dirty linen on the front landing during our entire stay. The owner doesn't care, or has died. Which at $275/night falls VERY short of expectations. Sorry. So much promise, failed to deliver. This could be such a charming place, but it isn't.

The 4 star rating is based on our renting the cottage for $99 a night for 3 nights, instead of the usual rate, through an internet discount deal. In that context this quaint cottage was good value. The facilities provided, and being across the road from the supermarket and a short walk to the wharf area, met our needs admirably. However, if we had paid the full rate we would not have been so happy - e.g. the difficult lock on the front door, the rotting timber at the entrance, a lounge chair in need of being resprung, the clothes drier not heating sufficiently, batteries in the various remote controls missing or flat, would have detracted from a sense of good value for money. Although the cooking facilities are limited, they met our needs.

This cottage has great potential, but requires urgent upgrading (including the installation of hand rails around the shower area) to provide good value for money, particularly when paying the full rate.

We spent 2 nights in the Henty Cottage last week and despite the pretty pictures we were not impressed. The proprietors seem to think they can hide behind the 'quaint and quirky' tag when really the cottage needs a BIG makeover. For $180 a night I at least expect good heating, not worn out electric heaters that were probably installed by the original residents! Seems that the owners are happy to just pull in the money and do little in return to make the cottage welcoming and comfortable. Avoid this place.

The 'Sir John' cottage was conveniently located across the road from the local supermarket and a short walk (albeit down the hill) to the main esplanade. We enjoyed its rustic charm but it lacked some of the conveniences of other properties we stayed at of similar kind eg the fridge was tiny, the cooking facilities limited and the fire a not so modern (or rustic) fake fire. The outlook from the rear was pretty and the laundry a bonus.

We stayed in the Church and our first impressions were fairly favourable as it is a charming old building. I think it is best enjoyed for one or two nights, as the practicalities do begin to jar after a couple of days. It is a a very large space (very high ceiling of course)to heat for a start and it was quite cold in February. The supplies of wood and kindling were not generous. There was only one electric heater, the second one did not work. It was quite dark as the lighting was poor - it was not possible to read in bed and difficult to read elsewhere. There is a poor choice of tv channels, only the ABC ones seemed to be available digitally. The decor is in need of attention. The living area looked messy and in need of a tidy up. I had the feeling that it had been lovingly converted some years ago but somewhat neglected since then.
On the plus side, it is in a good location for the attractions of Strahan - 5 minutes away down a steep hill. There is a supermarket across the road. The Church is on a road corner but traffic noise was not a problem. There is a washing machine in the bathroom.
This was an expensive property - Aus$ 230 per night and for that I would at least expect plentiful wood, good lighting and sufficient heaters!
I would not stay here again.

I am not quite quite sure why some people seem suprised at the age and decor of these cottages?... They are called Strahan COLONIAL cottages... Not MODERN or FUTURISTIC. We found the Police Superintendent's Cottage beautiful and charming. Yes, it is old school, but it is wholesome, honest and rustic. Loved our stay, only tiny request would be to meet the owner... Only really to ask about the area and general tourist info, however this seemed to be the normal way to do things throughout Tasmania and the owner did make contact details available and when we did call they were very helpful and lovely.
