"What do you want?" was how I was greeted at the Strahan Village reception centre when I dropped in to book a room. The person who was enquiring was the office 2 IC!!
The surly receptionist then offered the most expensive accommodation they have. I asked for something less expensive and she managed a knowing, sly little smirk. Feeling tired after the long drive from Cradle Mountain and a day on the water, I took their cheapest option. I was given a key and told to find my own way to the room. There was no parking available and I had to find a park in a public park (and pay the fee). When asked about dining options, of course I was told only about the establishments owned by Federal Hotels. (I didn't know that all these businesses were owned by the same group- a veritable monopoly appears to control Strahan). Such a shame. The room was poor value for money and in bad need of a refurbishment. My advice is to find an alternative to anything owned by the monopoly that calls itself "Pure Tasmania".

Stayed three nights in Hilltop Apartment. Fantastic view across harbour from balcony. Only downside was a steep walk down to reception (and the rest of the town) and back up to the unit. Compensated with a shuttle bus. Quiet location in a great little town.
Recommend booking the room as a bundle with either the Western railway trip (Ride to Queenstown in a train pulled by a 100 year old loco) and/or a trip up the Gordon River by luxury catamaran. These bundled with the room make for great value.

Despite the wild weather of the west coast, strahan village proved a cosy and comfortable retreat.
Food and service were outstanding and would highly recommend dining there.
Rooms are a little weary but I would guess that areas have been updated.
Great views. I'd definitely stay here when heading back to strahan.

We stayed in Strahan Village Waterfront Room where the room was lovely, very clean with a spa bath if you wished to use,
We were able to sit out on the front verandah overlooking the picture perfect view and early morning hear and see the local ducks being fed at one of the shops very close by. Breakfast at 42 degrees (Upstairs) was great and plenty to help your self, with great views also.
If we stayed in Strahan again I would book at lot ahead for one of the quaint cottages, it is a
sight of bygone days and they all look gorgeous.I believe you can see them on the web
We also went on the Railway (Premier Class) and although we couldn't do the whole trip to Queenstown due to major landslides at the time it was so worth the experience.
All and all a fantasic way to spend a 36yr anniversary.

Room Tip: We were on the ground floor right next to Reception and that way we didnt have to lug our cases upst...

I really loved our stay at the Strahan Village. The accommodation seemed quite basic however it was in a great location and was spotless. It could get noisy early in the morning. The decor was quite outdated. The staff were very friendly when we checked in. Had a drink at 42 degrees which has spectacular views of the harbour.
