The golf course is up there with the best (e.g. Portrush, Dornoch, Barnbougle, New South Wales, Humewood). The Lighthouse Loop (14th to 18th) is a set of great golfing holes with spectacular scenery. We played 18 in the morning then did two Lighthouse Loops and my cup was full. The wind was blowing 40kph gusting 60 kph but the designers give you ample fairway and approach space to negate this.

The clubhouse is a demountable but the food, wine and beer are excellent and all local fresh produce. The cabins are basic but comfortable.

I couldn't wish for anything more on a golf trip.

Thank you to all the hard working staff at Cape Wickham.

This is not Bandon Dunes level of service for better or worse.
It is an incredible golf course with perhaps 4 world class holes.
However it is a bare bones operation and the weather can be brutal

1. We flew from Launceston after playing Barnbougle on Sharp airlines on rainy day. Our bags got all wet and the pilot did the safety demonstration on his knees because he could not stand up in the airplane

2. Rented a beat up old truck with manual to drive to Cape Wickham. I was ignorant and therefore surprised how little there is on King Island

3. Amazing views greet you on arrival to the small dirt carpark at the course. The temporary clubhouse serves as the pro shop, accommodation check in, dining and lounge. The staff work hard and even set up the golf carts in the mornings.

4. The first hole at Cape Wickham is perhaps the best in the world. I have played Cypress and most of the top courses in the US

5. Heading to dinner on first night. There were wallabies looking in on the dining room and the lighthouse flashed all around. Dinner was surprisingly good given the limited facilities that they to cook and had but the rain was coming down sideways.
The fact that all golfers have dinner together actually worked well and there was plenty of chat between everyone which was nice

6. Still you have to walk 100 yards back to accommodation in the dark and you feel like you are at the end of the world.

7. Most people try to play 36 holes as the value proposition. We hit off around 9 am in 50 to 60 mph winds. I am a low handicap player and 4 putted the first as you could not helped be smashed around by the wind. The second is a 330 m par 4. Into the wind I crushed a driver driver and still had 50 m left to go. Downwind holes were impossible as well as a 60 degree lob wedge would run for 40 m

8. Thought the par 5 - 9th and par 3 11th were special holes.. However did not feel the 8th was fair hole downwind.. partner landed on the green and went screaming over. I landed short with my wedge and watch the ball roll backwards. Did not like the dual tees on 6th and 13th.. which were a little confusing. Also battling the wind which would move the ball 60 yards and hit down middle of 13 into a pot bunker.. Sigh

9. That is the problem with Cape Wickham.. Expensive to get there and if you have a bad weather day it is just miserable.. Three single figure handicaps lost over 20 balls and i did not break 100.. but did learn more about playing in the extreme wind

10. Winds dropped to 25mph the next day at Ocean Dunes and broke par says it all. I enjoyed that course more than Cape Wickham and it seemed a fairer course to me.

Yes the views are magic, yes the golf course has some magic holes but overall.....just! The course felt a bit unkept to us and some directions between holes on the first 9 would be handy.......we didnt stay there but was told the rooms where good and while the food was ok, the flys where bigger than the eye fillet and the place just wasnt up to par at all...left disapointed, this place could be exceptional ...just isnt!

We didn’t play golf but visited the club for lunch. The views really are amazing, it is right beside the tallest lighthouse in Australia which in itself is worth seeing. We called ahead and booked a table for lunch. The food was good standard fare and reasonably priced. The staff friendly and helpful. Definitely a place to visit whilst on your stay in King Island. Even better if you play golf.

golfing heaven
best course ever played
tip - bring own golf balls and lots of them
don't need to be a big hitter to enjoy an amazing golf experience
I will go back again despite the obvious travel involved
King Island itself and its friendly locals are great for a visit but the golf is the reason to visit
