The mixed bag of reviews about The Old Bank - ranging from the Terrible because of an hour-long wait for lunch to the Excellent for the "amazing" food and the "fantastic" coffee made our stop here something of a coin toss. But we were not looking for a full lunch and guessed that coffee and a cake would be a pretty safe bet. And safe it was - better than that! Ruth stuck with her skinny latte, I broke form to have a mocha while young Anna plumped for a hot chocolate - all were great, and came with little or no delay. And then there was our choice of cake - we chose well. From amid the lip-smacking range of cakes and confections on display in the cabinet, Ruth and I decided to share the Homegrown Greengage, white chocolate and Coconut Frangipane with White Chocolate Tasmanian Pepper Berry Truffles. It sells for the quirky price of $7.9. As our forks clashed over the first bites, we realised we were tasting class baking and real culinary innovation - it was wonderful. Tasmanian fusion drawn from traditional English or European recipes I'd guess? Each crumbly mouthful contained the tastes and flavours of every ingredient, right through to the last morsel. My late father would chase the last grain of rice round his dinner plate after one of my curry meals - I confess to doing the same with the hold-out crumbs from this exquisite tart. The owner and her staff were polite, efficient and knowledgeable about the food on offer and seemed genuinely pleased that we had experienced such an enjoyable and satisfying visit. If you are heading into the Tasmanian south - on your way to Hastings Caves or Cockle Creek - The Old Bank is a must.
