I hugely enjoyed my day and night trip with Inala. My guide, Karen, was hugely knowledgable and went out of her way to ensure I had a great trip. The whole ethos of Inala is brilliant and all the staff care passionately about the island and its wildlife. I would definitely come again or do one of their other trips.
This is not just a trip for birders (although I saw lots of great birds!), they provide you with great binoculars for example. Anyone interested in nature and Australia and Tasmania’s wonderful wildlife would love it. On the night trip you see so many mammals you won’t have seen in the wild if you’ve only done standard day trips.
Some of the highlights for me were the goshawks, the echidna we spotted and the quolls. Also a special shout out to the orphaned wallabies and pademelons! Just the cutest creatures ever!
Thanks for taking the time to leave a lovely review, and we're so glad that Karen was such a good fit for you during your Inala nature tour. All of our guides have specialist knowledge and our pre-arrival correspondence before every tour is designed to tailor an experience specifically geared to what you hope to see. We're so pleased that you enjoyed your time with us and that you came away with multiple highlights, and should you come back for a return visit, we'll make sure to point out the grown-up orphans amongst the rest of the crowd.
We didn't go on the tour but we stayed at Inala cottage for 4 nights. It is the perfect location. Very quiet, huge expanse of fields and woods to enjoy walks and the birdlife. Our host Tonia is the most enthusiastic and knowledgeable birder we have ever met. It is perfect so to anyone reading this, just book the cottage and go!
Thank-you for taking the time to leave a review! Inala is a 1,500-acre private wildlife reserve with only 2 accommodation cottages on site, so we like to think that you will definitely enjoy a quiet, peaceful time when you visit - birds and other wildlife noises notwithstanding! The whole Inala team are likeminded and committed to the sustainability of the Inala Reserve so that we can keep sharing our conservation milestones and making Inala a must-see destination for birders and other nature lovers. We welcome your return visit should you decide to just book the cottage and come back!
We did not have time to do a larger tour, but the $10-per-head visit to the museum and the adjoining 5-acre "Gondwanaland Garden" was fascinating. The museum is a collection of natural objects - minerals, shells and fossils mainly - most of which relate to Tasmania and her natural history over the past 200 million years. They are well presented and annotated in the small but very interesting museum. Regarding the fossils, it would be nice to see a few more Tasmanian specimens, as many of those on display are also found in our paleontology. However, the examples from overseas were truly spectacular and illustrative of the ecology of those times.
The very well tended and annotated 5 acre garden offered us many examples of plants which have endured down the millennia from the days of Gondwanaland. There was a lot to read and digest - so interesting, well researched and presented.
If natural history fascinates you, you will enjoy this museum/garden very much.
Dear josaja,
Thank you very much for your visit and lovely review of the museum and garden. We are so glad you enjoyed your time here. We have an enormous amount more fossils that are gradually making their way out onto display including many more Tasmania species, Tonia has been collecting since she was knee-high to a grasshopper. When you hopefully return one day, there will be a whole new selection for you to enjoy. Thanks again
Inala is a 1500 acre private reserve on South Bruny island. If you don't want a tour or feel like a long hike, don't miss the Gondwana garden and Jurassic museum at the entrance. The museum is a fascinating collection of fossils and some mind blowing shells, but I was really impressed by the garden which is not only beautifully landscaped, but includes some amazing very rare specimens of some of the oldest tree species in the world. The Tasmanian collection alone is excellent but the collection of Nothofagus spp. is the star attraction. What an ambitious work! I can only imagine what a stunning arboretum this will be in 20 to 30 years. If you're interested in plants at all, don't miss it!
Thank you very much for this lovely review of our garden and museum, we are proud of how well the garden has thrived under Tonia and Bori's tender care. Do come back one day to see the trees as they reach up to touch the blue Tasmanian sky.
Tonia will one day have her full collection of fossils and shells on display, we may need to build a museum extension very soon :)
Despite the fact that my husband and I took our 2-month trip to Australia (and to Bruny Island) during the tail end of the Australian summer when birds were petering out and it was hot, our 8 hours on Bruny with our exceptionally knowledgeable guide, Andrew, was nonetheless a memorable highlight of our entire trip. His background as an academic and his broad expertise in ecology, birds, flora and fauna were the perfect match for us. My husband is a behavioral ecologist and avid birder and I enjoy someone who is willing to express opinions when asked! Yes we loved seeing new life birds like the 40 spotted Pardalote, Flame Robin, Scrubtit and Hooded Plover; and we loved walking through the educational gardens at Inala; and it was thrilling watching a Goshawk devour some road kill from the bird blind at the compound, but the REAL highlight was spending the day with Andrew, a lifelong resident of the island. We so enjoyed talking about politics, environmental challenges, educational systems and cracking a few jokes along the way. Inala is an IMPRESSIVE operation. What a treasure for Bruny Island to have them out there setting aside land and making sure that nature comes first as its population increases. Our only regret is that we did not STAY at Inala for at least a night, to experience night-time critters and have more time at this magical spot.
Thanks for taking the time to leave such a lovely review, and we agree, next time you will have to spend a night or two! One of the benefits of a personalised tour is that we try to find out a bit about you before arrival so we can fit the best guide to your interests, and hopefully meet or exceed your expectations. It sounds as though Andrew's enthusiasm and background was perfect for you, which is really positive to hear. It is also great feedback for both Inala and Andrew that despite the heat, you had great views of the resident birds.
The grounds operated and owned by Inala Nature Tours is beautifully landscaped with native species and a mind for the fauna that roam the grounds. Our guide, Tonia Cochran made us feel at home on our 2 night stay on the grounds in a fully equipped comfy cottage and then lead us on a tour of discovery of Tasmania. Her knowledge of the flora, fauna and history of Tasmania is all encompassing. Having traveled extensively, I can truly say that she was the BEST guide that we have ever encountered and wish she and her business continued success. Thanks Tonia for a great time
Thank-you for your wonderful review of Inala Nature Tours! Tonia has opened up her home and Inala is now a 1,500 acre private reserve dedicated to habitat restoration and species conservation. We're so pleased that you enjoyed your time on the property and that we were able to share not only Inala and Bruny Island with you, but a nice slice of 'mainland' Tasmania as well. Tonia's passion is contagious, and as a team we thoroughly enjoy creating experiences and memories for you. We look forward to welcoming you back again!
