Last year we spent a week at Inala on the spectacular southern end of Bruny Island in Tasmania. This year's Cape York Tour in Far North Queensland was the second tour we've completed with Inala Nature Tours under Tonia Cochrane's wing. We can't speak highly enough of Tonia's warm and inclusive leadership, her passion for the environment and her desire to share wonderful wildlife experiences with others.
The organisational aspects of touring with Inala made things so easy and allowed us to relax... which is lucky because the Cape York itinerary was jam-packed with early starts for birding, evenings seeking out various nocturnal critters and plenty of good food and time for shut-eye in between. There were 7 other people on the tour with us. Tonia was attentive to each guests' needs without making a fuss - nothing ever felt like it was too much trouble for Tonia.
For this tour, Tonia teamed up with Steve Davidson, who has an outstanding knowledge of bird calls, behaviour and habitats - in fact we dubbed Steve the "Sound Hound"! He loves what he does and it makes him indefatigable in the search for a new bird. He's actually pretty good with wallabies, snakes, lizards, frogs... land snails, you name it! He can leap out of the car and have a spotting scope set up in seconds, he can drive along dirt roads and name bird calls that are fragments of sound to the average listener. We learnt so much from Steve and would jump at the chance to tour with him again.
Can't finish this review without a huge plug for the Portland Road Cafe which provided the food for our group during the 5 days we spent in Iron Range National Park. This included lunch and dinner every day (best desserts ever) and all dietary requirements were met with ease and without fuss. AND the food was generous and surprisingly delicious for such a remote location north of Lockhart River on the east coast of the Cape.
We are now wondering when we can make time for a third Inala Nature tour...
Dear Sally,
Your review makes us very happy. Thank you for taking the time to be so detailed and kind in your descriptions of why you enjoyed the tour so much. Steve and Tonia make an incredible team, we are so glad you had a ball with them. We completely agree that the Portland Road Cafe are fabulous, thank you for giving them a shout-out.
Do get in touch whenever we can help you with your next adventure, all the very best from the Inala team
We stopped at the Jurassic garden on a whim, but were glad what we did. The museum is full of fascinating items from bottles to fossils. The garden is beautifully laid out, with just the right information perfectly placed. It's interesting to see plants of the same species from different parts of the world, and how they have evolved in similar and different ways over time.
Thank you so much for dropping in to support us and for leaving a review. We are so glad that you enjoyed your visit, Tonia's lifelong knowledge and passion shines through in the garden and the museum and we are delighted when other love it as much as we do.
We hope you return again one day,
Best Wishes, The Inala Team
My partner booked us in for a morning tour of the Inala property and we were joined by two close friends, who are also avid bird nerds! We were warmly greeted by our guide, Cat, who led us around the remarkable property (a quick peek first into the raptor hide provided great views and photo opportunities of a Brown Goshawk). Cat was not only very engaging and friendly, but also highly knowledgeable of the birds we were hearing and seeing, as well as the trees and plants around us - freely sharing her clear passion for what we encountered. Despite the blustery conditions, we saw 7 of the endemic birds (and heard another) which to our collective delight included absolutely fantastic views of a very active group of Forty-spotted Pardalotes; hands shaking with excitement I managed to fire off a cluster of record shots. Our list was around three dozen by the time we ended the tour with a lovely hot cup of coffee. Before leaving we were invited to have a look from the raptor hide again which produced a stunning pair of (white) Grey Goshawks. It is really evident how much Tonia and her team at Inala believe in conservation and I unequivocally recommend a tour with Cat around this amazing slice of Bruny. We will definitely return again :)
I classify myself as somewhere between a casual and keen bird watcher, so I visited Inala to see Tasmanian endemics. I stayed for three nights at Nairana and didn't have to go far to see quite a number of them, including forty-spotted pardalotes, dusky robins and an assortment of honeyeaters. Cat and Tonia were extremely helpful in suggesting places to visit around the island for good bird watching. I also really enjoyed the Gondwanan garden and look forward to returning to see how it develops.
Dear Tablelander,
You are most kind to leave us a review and we are delighted that you enjoyed your time at Inala and managed to see so many of the endemics while staying on the property.
We are thrilled at the way the Gondwana garden has flourished in three years and as you say, you must come back for a future visit when it is even more of a lush forest. I predict by then you may even classify yourself as a very keen birder :)
Best Wishes,
The whole Inala team
I stayed in Nairana Cottage at Inala from Feb. 17th-21st 2017.
The accommodation was excellent and my personal guide, Cat Davidson who was with me for three and a half days was fantastic-a walking encyclopaedia. She took me all over Bruny Island seeing birds and animals. On three evenings we watched Little Penguins coming ashore. It was also great to share our previous travel experiences and to have meals with her in excellent restaurants. My time at Inala concluded by being so pleased to have Dr Tonia Cochran Take me back to Hobart
Dear Brenguin,

We learned about Inala from the couple who run the Red Mill House in Daintree, Queensland and are grateful to them for their recommendation. Hidden away near the south tip of South Bruny Island, Inala is a sanctuary for birds and other wildlife. We stayed in the original farm house (3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, perfect for two couples). We had access to the entire area and thoroughly enjoyed our 3 day stay. We saw rare birds (40-spotted Pardelote), not so rare birds (Green Roselle, Wattlebird, several different honey eaters, Fairy Wrens, and more), and wallabies and pademelons. The staff were accommodating and friendly. And they helped us with dinner reservations at the winery and the Bruny Hotel. We did not take a tour, but observed several small groups during our stay. The garden is beautiful.
Dear Jerry,
We are so glad you enjoyed your recent visit to Inala and delighted that the birds showed up to greet you. Thank you for your kind words about the staff and the garden, we are delighted you enjoyed Bruny as much as we do. We hope to see you again,
