Review of The Forge

The Forge
Ranked #3 of 84 Restaurants in Washington
Price range: USD 6 - USD 34
Description: The ‘Old Smithy’ in Washington Village, is a 400 year old Grade II Listed building. The building has had a colourful past, formerly; a blacksmith’s forge, stables and even a pottery, it is famed locally for its connection to the capture of the highwayman Robert Hazlit, who was arrested and subsequently hanged after being spotted by a local lad, having his horse shod here by the resident blacksmith. Things are slightly different these days. Now ‘The Forge’, the building has undergone a full restoration and has been transformed into an eclectic, vibrant eatery, serving the highest quality, locally sourced, wholesome fresh food this side of the river. Accompanied by an extensive wine selection, locally distilled gins, real ales and great cocktails, The Forge is an excellent destination for those seeking fantastic quality food and drink, prepared by experienced talented chefs, in an historic yet cosy setting.

Enjoyed a fantastic night at the Forge celebrating a special birthday. We had a table for 16 and pre-ordered. The service was excellent and the food was delicious and good quality. We will be calling again. Thank you.

Very pleased to discover The Forge. Quite a surprise! Nice concise menu of competently prepared, well presented and unique dishes. Very impressed by the freshness of the produce (great fish!) and flavours. I don’t know who the chef is but he should be proud of his work.
Pleasant atmosphere and excellent service from friendly and efficient staff too.
Highly recommended.

This was our third visit to this restaurant. We went with friends on this occasion who had travelled from South Shields, on an awful snowy night.
On the previous 2 visits we thought food was very good and, although the service was a little slow, we made allowances as we appreciate if food is cooked from scratch it’s going to take a little longer. On this occasion however it passed the limit of acceptability. Ordered drinks were brought quickly and then we ordered our food. One of the mains was no longer available but they substituted the Bass with Hake. It then took 45 minutes for the starters to arrive, with no bread provided for us to nibble on! Starters were good but no explanation given as to why they took so long. Following the starters it took nearly an hour for the mains to arrive. We were advised that the stove in the kitchen had gone off! By this time the bottle of wine my friend and I were sharing was nearly gone. I asked if we could have a glass each of the same wine for our mains but was informed that that particular wine was only sold by the bottle. We didn’t want to buy (or drink) a full bottle. This is the point when a good restaurant, because of the wait, would have opened the bottle and given us a glass of wine. After the mains the staff seemed to dwindle and it took a while to get the attention of a waitress. Time was marching on, I was feeling quite cold with a draught on my back, so we decided to skip pudding and just get coffee - they didn’t have decaf which is all I drink and I was advised they ran out that day so only the other three had coffee. We wanted at that stage to just pay our bill and go - it was late and the weather wasn’t good - our friends had to drive home in the snow and that’s when the real fun began!
When we finally got someone’s attention we were advised that the card machine wasn’t working - nearly half an hour later and following a full discussion where we declined to leave our card details, we agreed to phone next day to pay bill when machine was working again. To cut a long story short the following day after a few phone calls, the card machine still not working, I offered to visit the restaurant with the cash, although inconvenient. I listed all the issues and although apologies were given no concessions to the bill were made. As this was a recommendation to our friends who regularly eat in good restaurants, it was embarrassing for us and we don’t think we’ll be visiting The Forge again anytime soon. It’s a real pity because we thought we had finally found a decent restaurant in Washington as food is good and staff are nice. However, they really need to learn customer service and time management.

For such a large conurbation Washington has a paucity of decent restaurants. Plenty of places to eat, none that are as good as The Forge. So Hallelujah, the Village now has such a thing. Very good food in nice surroundings are all that you'd expect of a decent night out, however the staff on our visit exemplified how it should be done. Thank you all for the pleasant and attentive help, most of all thanks to the kitchen for supplying first rate food.
