I stayed at the Oxford Witney with my friend in October and it was the worst hotel stay I have ever experienced.
On the evening of our stay we were the victims of verbal abuse by another visitor. Anybody would feel threatened by a highly intoxicated man looming down on them and shouting abuse, but when the comments are derogatory, sexualised and aimed at two young women, the experience is also humiliating.
However, it wasn’t until I approached the bar and asked for help that we felt like we were going to get any support in resolving the situation - even though it had been going on for quite some time. The man in question even said, ‘no one is going to help you’ and he was absolutely right. Eventually the Operations Manager tried to calm down the aggressive man but when this did not work he walked away giving the man the opportunity to continue verbally attacking us, ending in him throwing a bottle of beer at us. Thankfully this did not hit myself or my friend, but this was down to luck not intervention – we could quite easily have been looking at a far more serious outcome.
After the man left the premises of his own accord, the Operations Manager took us into a conference room to discuss the incident. We were both visibly shaken but we were not offered any comforting or sympathetic words. In fact, we were interrogated about the incident. While I appreciate that staff cannot control how guests and visitors behave, they can control how a situation is dealt with when a person’s actions become out of control and impact on others.
It was quite clear that the man was heavily intoxicated long before his attention was drawn to us, he should not have served more alcohol in the state he was in.
Not knowing whether the man would be returning to the hotel, and being given no assurances that he would be removed if he did, we obviously felt unsafe staying at the hotel. The Operations Manager asked if we wanted to stay somewhere else, but explained it would be down to us to arrange this. It was not a viable option for us to start looking for a new hotel late at night in an area we are unfamiliar with.
The following morning we felt unsafe going to breakfast, which was included in our stay, in case we ran into the person that attacked us. When we checked out, I explained to the Operations Manager that the incident had not been handled well, he had no response to this and to rub salt into the wound, we were presented with our bill from the previous evening, as if our stay had been uneventful.
The gravity of this situation was not taken seriously. We were left feeling ashamed, vulnerable and unsupported while the man responsible has seemingly got away with no repercussions.
Communication with the hotel after this experience was difficult and they were not proactive in addressing our complaint.
I would highly recommend looking for somewhere else to stay rather than visiting this establishment.

Stayed 5 nights with breakfast. Lovely and clean spacious bedroom. The bed was a super king in a standard room which was great but still had lots of space and didn't feel cramped . The swimming pool and changing room was again very clean. It was not busy in the morning and evening when I went to use it. Breakfast was a good selection.

This hotel provided exactly what we needed for an overnight stay while visiting the area.
We were on a "Secret Escapes" deal - £99 for the room, full English Breakfast, 2-course dinner and a bottle of house wine. Unbeatable value.

The welcome was warm and professional - receptionist was particularly helpful.
The room was fine - clean and well appointed. Nice comfy bed.
Restaurant - we had a very good dinner with a decent bottle of house red. I had the excellent beef with a calf's liver starter (very tasty). Attentive waiter - lovely evening - many thanks.

This might have been a 4/5 rating but the excellent staff throughout eg the manager very kindly lent me a pair of his cufflinks as I'd left mine at home! and the excellent VFM nudge this into 5/5. Would definitely recommend.

Would recommend

Everything was fine. We arrived early and tried to check-in, but were politely told our room wasn't ready. No problem. We got back around 8pm and were checked-in quickly with no fuss. Room neat, clean, tidy and functional. We checked-out early, before breakfast. No issues. A relaxing night's stay.

We had a Wowcher deal for this hotel for a one night stay, 2 course meal and bottle of wine for two. The room was spacious, very clean and the shower system was good.

We enjoyed using the spa, although the changing rooms are quite small. We got there for a Saturday so the pool was quite busy when we decided to use it. Sauna was good just a bit small for the number of intended occupants. Steam room was lovely as was the spa bath.

Dinner was absolutely amazing, 5* most definitely this is amazing value for money. Breakfast was just as good with a buffet with almost everything you can think of to choose from. Staff are incredibly accommodating and friendly.

The only complaint I have is that we stayed in room 11 and the bed was absolutely awful, lumpy with springs sticking out. We didn’t have a good night sleep at all!
