“Perfect Idyll in the Centre of an Ancient Kingdom”
Reviewed 19 August 2014 for a stay in August 2014

A newly modernised and perfectly functional accommodation in a perfect location for exploring the beautiful county of Northumberland. Easily accessible from the A1 but practically rural
when you arrive at your destination (although you can still hear a faint buzz from the A1). A stones throw from the ‘capital’ of Northumberland - Bamburgh and beautifully placed to explore the tidal island of Holy Island (a must, but check tides) and Inner Farne (an absolute must – we used Billy Shiels boat trips for our visit) and the fabulous beaches of Embleton Bay and nearby Dunstan Steads and Craster. We popped into Bamburgh for a walk on the beach to watch the sunset on our last night (easy to park around 9pm and a quick walk to the sands). Absolutely very special indeed. You can see Holy Island, The Farnes and Dunstanburgh castle as the sun slips into the sea. Brilliant.

The cottage itself is more of a studio setting, with a small but adequate kitchen area to prepare food and an excellent range of utensils. The cottage is clean, modern and has an eco-ethic which
highly appealed to myself and my partner and so make sure you pack your ECOVER cleaning products, although we did find that previous guests had kindly left some of theirs, so all in all we
were well stocked – We opted to clean the cottage ourselves for a reduction on the week’s rent and found this to be no problem at all as we are tidy people anyway and the size of the property lends itself to neatness and easy maintenance, even if it seemed previous occupants had missed some basics.

The bed is on a raised platform and has lovely views out onto the field beyond, where we happily watched cattle and a pair of spritely hares! The owner has thoughtfully provided a set of binoculars and we used them a lot. The seated area outside is gravelled and so we recommend some flip flops to slip on and off quickly if you like to sit outside as the gravel is a bit unpleasant under bare foot. There are two raised beds with salad and veg growing and a selection of herbs, which you can use should you wish. Depleted for our visit but a lovely touch we thought. The decor was bright, clean and modern with a few quirky touches and the lovely log burner which we used a couple of times in the evenings, warmed up the room a treat. Some logs and kindling were left (thank you) but should you require more then Purdey Services at the top of the road sells all you will need.

All in all, brilliant accommodation, perfect for a couple (although if you get on each others nerves, probably not the right place for you as there is nowhere really to go and hide, due to its studio nature!) and we would happily stay here again, and our only real gripe would be about the shower, which drained very slowly and even began to leak out of the doors meaning that showers had to be very brief. Also a shelf within the shower would have been incredibly useful to put our gels on as they had to remain on the floor in the deepening water!! Also, there is a lack of storage, which, for the duration of our stay, was not a real problem and we travel relatively light, but it may be for some.

We would recommend a visit to The Lord Crewe restaurant in Bamburgh, which does big portions for reasonable prices. It’s not high end, but it does the job! We also ate at The Treehouse Restaurant in Alnwick Castle Gardens on our last night, which, although a bit more pricey, is a fantastic dining experience. We can also recommend the Fish and Chips from Neptune in Seahouses.

All in all, a fabulous holiday which we will remember for years to come. Northumbria has so much to do. We shall return!

“Comfortable and convenient”

The location just away from the A1 was really handy for visiting all the local attractions but far enough away to avoid any traffic noise.
The cottage was compact but had all we needed. We ate in on four nights with adequate cooking facilities and went out to Bamburgh pub resaurants on the other evenings.
We loved the view out to the fields watching the cattle, the young hare, the buzzards and the rest of the bird life.
The only criticism would be that the hot water took a few seconds to draw down and run hot. Patience is a virtue!

“Great cosy place to stay for short breaks”
Reviewed 4 April 2014 for a stay in March 2014

We found this place, clean and tidy, with everything you need for a short break. The log burner kept us warm and cosy so we didn't need any other heating. Great location for trips out but you do need a car.

“Winter Joy”
Reviewed 4 February 2014 for a stay in January 2014

We very much enjoyed a midweek break in this lovely studio. It is in such a peaceful location yet within easy reach of Bamburgh , Alnwick, Berwick and other lovely little coastal harbours and villages.it was an absolute joy to just sit and watch the darkness descend, then light the log burning stove and relax in the evenings.
The alternative heating panel warms the room in no time at all during the day, should it be needed.
The studio is well furnished with some nice little decorative touches. We would hope to visit again.

“Comfy place to stay at”
Reviewed 14 October 2013 for a stay in October 2013

Stayed at Bamburgh Gate 2, a lovely studio cottage with attention to detail. A lot of good things to say about the place. It was warm and cosy, well situated and equipped, and since we weren't exceptionally lucky with the weather, this was just a great place to come home to and hang out at. It's situated just a few minutes out of Bamburgh, where we visited the impressive castle on a stormy day. We had the luxury of having a car, which is I think what you need in the area. It'll also get you to Holy Island, the little highlight of our trip.
Outside of Bamburgh Gate 2, you'll find some lovely veggie patches, which I thought added to the charm of the place.
There is room for improvement in most places, so I would say that it would be cool, if a couple of towels were thrown in. I always make the mistake of taking my own towels, and never need them. I always forget that they are usually provided. Most luckily, my partner had grabbed some last minute, and we were fine. Having read through the property description, I couldn't find any reference to whether they would be provided or not. All in all no big issue. It would just be a nice touch, as would be the supply of a couple of logs for the fire.
We couldn't fault the accommodation otherwise. Maybe it would be good to add a check-out time to the folder inside. I couldn't find it. On our last holiday there had been a mix-up with the times, and a cleaning lady surprised us in the morning when we were luckily just about ready to set off.
At Bamburgh Gate 2 we did quite a lot of pre-departure cleaning ourselves. Normally, we just need to put dishes away, wipe kitchen surfaces, make the bed, take the rubbish out, give the place a tidy. Here, we both spent one hour cleaning shower, sinks, toilet, fridge, sweeping the floors. I personally enjoy cleaning but I do think it should be made more clear to guests in the property ad beforehand that a deep-cleaning session is due before departure so they can schedule in extra time to get this done (especially helpful for small families and older travelers).
We will recommend this holiday rental, as there are plenty of plus points to this place! Thanks again.

Management Response
15 Oct 2013
We really appreciate the feedback. Thank you. Our studio cottages are so compact and low maintenance, experience has taught us that most people prefer to pay a lower rate for their stay by doing their own cleaning. Towels are the same really; providing and laundering these each week can add up to 15% to each booking. Our competitive pricing means that some guests can afford to visit several times a year. For those less concerned about the cost, both cleaning and towels are offered as a paid option at point of booking but clearly we needed to make this more prominent and have now done so.
