A gem of a museum full of local history and a fascinating maritime collection. Some top quality boat models, local history and very professional display on Dunkirk and WW1 trenches. Artworks, historic items from Deal's High Street and Royal Marines past. Located in interesting old buildings with a pretty courtyard.Thoughtful provision of seating. Some well chosen postcards and local history books in the little shop. We spent an hour without any difficulty and will go back for more. They deserve support. I would recommend to anyone who likes the sea and ships or local history.

I visited in August with 3 friends. We were down from London and it was our first trip to Deal. We all thought later that the time in the Maritime Museum was one of the highlights of the day. A lovely surprise, what a museum should be, full of marine-related objects all displayed in a good, cluttered way - much more visually fun than some of the bigger museums that have regenerated into digital, glassed-in customer experiences. I loved being able to try and pick up one of the canon balls I discovered on the floor under the chairs chairs or pretend I was a sailor in Master and Commander with the telescope I found propped in the window frame.
The staff were friendly and full of local maritime and historical stories that enhanced our time there. We were told of the customary lines of raw young sailors queueing up for their first tattoo every year. Some examples of traditional maritime body art in the museum would not be amiss! Great place.

You get a very warm welcome and there's more than enough to see. I especially liked the mock-up WW1 trench. And the photos of famous folk with Deal associations.
