“Worst holiday stay ever”
Reviewed 5 September 2014 for a stay in August 2014

We booked the pottery shed to break up the journey with young children between london and our home in belgium for a family visit. We found the owner and contact person to be extremely inflexible, unpleasant and insensitive about arrival time change (as it turned out by 1hr30 minutes). Even when said delay was communicated with mimimum possible delay and explanation provided (that this was due to the diagnosis of terminal illness in immediate family member and imminent arrival of hospice workers at family home) we were informed that we had caused huge inconvenience because the owner had made her own appointments for the day already to fit in around our original estimated arrival time and that we had better arrive by 3pm (instead of between 12h30 and 13h30) or would be locked out until 7pm when her husband returned from work (owner had made an appointment with her brother in law in London that afternoon). On arrival at the pottery shed in Cranbrook (read Sandhurst village near petrol station) we were told that the property really wasn't suitable for children and again (as this had been mentioned already by email) that it was our responsibility to make sure they did not fall into the pond and drown. Mysteriously, it was somehow also claimed (both on arrival and by phone) that I had previously mentioned that I would be staying with my mother and no husband or children so it was unexpected (and inconvenient?) that I had arrived with a family. This assertion was never explained and was inexplicable to us since we only ever stop in Kent en route to visit my parents. Although we apologised twice on arrival for any inconvenience caused by our 1.5 hour delay in arriving no appreciation of the effort taken to get there despite the unforeseen, explained, devastating and entirely unavoidable circumstances. We were, however, informed that there were dogs loose in the grounds that barked at strangers, and indeed the owners, when they came into view. The up side of this was that after the first, very noisy, arrival of the dogs (that reduced the kids to tears) they did not dare venture out anywhere near the dangerous pond which relieved us from the onerous extra responsibility of preventing them from drowning. As it turned out, said owner had rearranged her appointment with her brother in law for the morning after our arrival but, somehow, did not find it necessary to inform us of this fact adding unnecessarily and inconsiderately to the stress and anxiety of our attempt to get there by the 15h00 deadline. We have stayed in several places in Kent as a family already en route between Belgium and London, all of which we have very much enjoyed, but had originally wanted to try the pottery shed to visit nearby Sissinghurst. The pottery shed was comfortable and colourfully decorated but was the least welcoming and most poorly equipped accomodations that we have stayed in in terms of kitchen facilities (almost no mugs and no glasses (+ beware, no dishwasher). The day before our departure we were visited and told that it would be convenient if we left as early as possible (and before the 10am official departure time if feasible) as other guests would be arriving at 12h00. However, all other ills pale into insignificance when contrasted with the lack of empathy, kindness and consideration of the host which utterly soured our experience pre-arrival and to end of stay. In truth, we could not wait to leave and only stayed the two out of three nights we had paid for as, under the circumstances, rest was essential for safe onward travel. In scores of holidays in the UK and on the continent our stay at the pottery shed holds the dubious honour of being the very worst 'holiday' stay ever. We will never return, would never recommend it and, particularly in view of the owners own comments on arrival, believe that it should be clearly described as unsuitable for those with young children. We would also caution that, in our experience, those who choose to stay here should be prepared to fit in around the owners own arrangements and interests rather than vice versa.

In response to this review we would first of all express our sadness that these guests perceived their stay as ‘the worst ever’. And secondly our extreme shock to receive this review which is so different from all the responses from our previous guests. We have had over 80 visitors (many not booking through trip advisor) and this is the first negative review or (comment in visitors book) that we have received. And gosh it is very negative.
Even the welcome cake didn’t get a mention!
Throughout the booking process we were very accommodating to these guests.
We had indeed gone to great lengths to accommodate the guests’ booking prior to arrival as they changed the dates on several occasions. They had asked beforehand if they could reduce the number of nights of their stay, but due to the short notice of this we were unable to offer a refund. So the decision to stay only two nights was not, as suggested in the review, made as a result of their bad experience. We also made every effort to reorganize the day to be there when they arrived. Again we fully appreciated the very understandable reason for their lateness. Consequently we were able to be there when they arrived.
We always inform our prospective guests that we have a large pond that it is not fenced and we state in our advert that The Pottery Shed is not suitable for young children. If they go ahead and book, then I do just remind them to take care. We are sorry that they took our concern for their children’s safety as over anxious but do not regret suggesting they keep an eye on their young children. I believe it to have been a responsible precaution.
We quite understand that the children were scared by the family dogs when they arrived, but we did put the dogs in at the time and reassured them of their friendliness. Quite often guests express the wish to take the dogs home with them when they leave.
We do pride ourselves on the cleanliness of The Pottery Shed, the facilities, and the comfort of the beds, and were sorry to note from the review that even in this respect The Pottery Shed did not ‘come up to scratch’ as far as these guests were concerned.
We do hope that people who may be interested in booking The Pottery Shed will take the time to read other reviews before dismissing it. Many of our guests return two or three times. We always try to make people feel comfortable and welcome and we are genuinely devastated that these guests found their stay to be so awful.

We were looking for a comfortable, quiet place to stay after five weeks of hectic touring in order to re-charge our batteries before heading home to New Zealand. The Pottery Shed met our needs perfectly and I have no hesitation in recommending it highly.

The booking process was easy and Sarah was on hand to offer advice and help whenever requested. We are particularly grateful that she was on hand when a tooth ache threatened to spoil our stay.

There are plenty of country walks nearby and Sarah's recommended walk to Bodiam Castle is one that everyone should consider. The village shop is only a two minute stroll and it has a splendid bakery section which was difficult to resist after we used it to supplement our first breakfast.

We found plenty of places to visit that were not very far by car but we particularly loved the peaceful haven and privacy of staying at The Pottery Shed.

“Peaceful and Relaxing”

We stayed at The Pottery Shed and found it so
relaxing and peaceful. It was exactly as it is described
by the owners. We were particularly impressed at how clean
and comfortable The Pottery Shed was.
Being down a drive made it feel even more like a secret
hideaway. As you go through the gates down the drive the
garden opens up into what only can be described as
parkland without the people! A hidden gem.
Yet it was very conveniently situated for all the historic
places and gardens we wanted to visit but to be honest we
felt we just wanted to get back to ‘The Pottery Shed’ to
relax and enjoy the tranquil surroundings.
The owner’s Sarah and Ian welcomed us on our arrival with
a lovely cake! They showed us around The Pottery Shed’ and
then very much left us alone to enjoy our holiday. We did
not feel that having the owners nearby a disadvantage
because they respected our privacy but were friendly and
helpful if we needed anything.
There is a village shop down the road which was useful and
Hawkhurst is a few miles drive away where there is a
bigger supermarket.
We will be back next year.

“Tranquil Comfort”
Reviewed 16 June 2014 for a stay in April 2014

Prior instructions allowed us to find The Pottery Shed without any hassles. We were greeted by Sarah on arrival and given an excellent introduction to the property. We were to find that Sarah was always available for advice. We always find that it is an advantage to have the host live on site so that needed assistance is readily available.

The Pottery Shed was as advertised - extremely comfortable and very well equipped. Everything worked and there were no unpleasant surprises.

The large glass doors opening onto the paved area provided lovely vistas of the large and beautiful maintained gardens; complete with gnarled apple trees, ponds, resident ducks, rabbits and two very friendly dogs. During our stay two sets of baby ducks were born.

We have stayed in a very wide range of extremely varied properties in many countries and it is rare to stay in a property that affords the sort of peace and tranquillity we enjoyed in our week at The Pottery Shed.

The location, as well as being peaceful, was very convenient to sights and convenient shopping. There were two convenience stores and a petrol service station almost next door and a large Tesco supermarket was very close by.

We will certainly return to The Pottery Shed and we recommend this property most enthusiastically.

Thank you so much for the great review. We would like to make a comment regarding the village shop (convenience stores) and the 'petrol service station being almost next door'. We are concerned that this might give the impression that 'The Pottery Shed' is on a busy road. 'The Pottery Shed' is in fact down a fairly long gravel drive which although is in the village is very much tucked away. People who live in the small road on to which the drive emerges are surprised that there is even a property down the drive. There is a village shop down the lane and a small petrol station but we would not describe them as being almost next-door. The Tesco supermarket which was also mentioned is about a four to five miles drive away.

The Pottery Shed is a beautiful house with a nice view. Around the house nice walks in the country. We visited Bodiam Castle and Sissinghurst Castle. Sarah and Ian have lots of good ideas for an excursion or walk. And the beds: they are superb!
