If you tire of the jazzed-up beach by the pier, there is always Chalkwell Beach to fall back on. There is free parking (I believe for up to 2 hours), nice and quiet - no crowds, no shops to speak of - and a nice sandy beach with a paddling pool. For train travellers, it is a short walk from Chalkwell station.

Visited Chalkwell Beach after reading reviews of how quiet it was. True, there were not as many people as you may expect in the summer holidays. However, after everyone in the party cut their feet after exploring the flats as the sea went out, we guessed this might be the reason! Flip flops and crocs had to be abandoned due to suction and then we found the larger razor-sharp shells just below the sand/mud flats. These caused some pretty serious cuts to the children's feet that were very painful for a couple of days. Ruined the day. Just wanted to warn families so they can be prepared.

Compared to the glorious Dutch or Belgian shore, this is just a tiny pebbly little beach. But still pleasant and well facilitated. Probably the nicest one in the Southend area - even though The Leigh-on-sea beach have given themselves a best beach award :-)

The only problem is because that’s a river it can happen u go and don’t have water just sand if is a hot day like it’s being is a really bad experience because u can’t take the heat anymore but if you’re lucky u will looooove it
