Stopped for cuppa and cake before commencing our dog along the water. Very busy place but still found somewhere to sit and the queue for food although long went quickly. They say you eat with your eyes well this place definitely fed my appetite. Glorious selection of cakes to suit every taste and palette and very reasonably priced.
Dog friendly, good toilet facilities.
Settled for chocolate cake myself which was fab but my fellow diners had various other options - scone with jam and cream, lemon cake, carrot cake. All was delicious and highly recommended.

Whilst out on the bikes and riding along the tow path this is an excellent place to start and stop. There is a large car park, but remember they close and put a chain across at 5.30pm.
Being Bank Holiday Monday they were very busy, so expect to form an orderly queue that at 4.00pm was ten deep. Service when it was our turn was quick, friendly and efficient. The coffee was hot and tasted as you would expect but the chocolate cake didn't excite the palate.
Regardless of that we will visit again.
Definitely go there again.

Visited here today, Monday, but the weather was cloudy and a little drizzle in the air. Was our first visit here. Good size car park. Ideal for the many dog walkers that were here. Had mug of tea and slice of cake each, lovely and fresh. Friendly people. Walked along a little way looking at the many boats. Would have spent longer here if it was sunny. Will go again in better weather.

We have visited the Lock many a time and returned again on Sunday, so thought it time to review.
Imagine free car parking and having the opportunity walk along one of the most picture perfect rivers in Essex and finishing the day off with scrummy sandwiches and / or a cream tea.
We walked from Paper Mill Lock to Hoe Mill and back. The surrounding countryside is stunning. Plenty of ducks and moor hens and elegant swans paddle along under beautiful swaying trees, some covered in blossom. We also noted horses and fowls in a rich green meadow and wild geese resting. There is a beautiful Church on the riverside at Ulting and just prior to Hoe Mill and spectacular weir. We rested here before the walk back stopping along the way to take pictures of the moored boats, locks and bridges. the outing would not be complete without a legendary stop at the tea room. There are plenty of tables alongside the river and we indulged in local butcher sausage and chutney and egg mayo sandwiches and two cream scones.
The staff are so friendly here. All in all a perfect day for all the family.

Took our two dogs for a good walk along the river and had great lunch at the lock tea rooms. Was very busy at the tea rooms, so had to queue but the food was well worth the wait, the cakes were excellent, dogs thaught so to.

Only downer was the lazy dog owners who think it's ok to pick up their dogs mess and then drop the bag next to the footpath instead of taking to a bin.

More bins would be beneficial until the humans can be trained to the same standard as their dogs.
