“Feeling Festive at The Randolph”
Reviewed 6 December 2011

We booked a nights stay here last minute as we were looking for somewhere near to Beccles where my husband had a meeting the next day. The hotel offered us a bb and dinner rate that was great value compared to some of the other quotes were had from the hotels in southwold town centre...one being £240 b and b...in november aswell!! When we arrived we were given the keys to room 10 whicg was at the top of the house. The room was decorated to a high modern standard and the bedding was all top quality. In the room was a flat screen tv, kettle and a bath and shower which was fab.We had the evening meal in the pub side of the hotel as there was a fire on and the dining room was quite cold. The bar area is fine for relaxed dining and there seemed to be alot of locals coming in for a drink after work and also we got speaking to some americans on business there also. The evening meal was 3 courses and it was all produced fresh with a fantastic choice of local produce and came with fresh bread which was warm....and filled us up abit too much but was delicious.I has the fish in southwold adnams beer batter and my husband had the steak, both were 5 star. In the morning you can choice from a large choice of items for breakfast and again all are made fresh, we had the salmon and scrambled egg bagels.....the scrambled egg was to die for!!We had a lovely stay and would like to go back in the summer to see southwold in daylight and do the short walk from the hotel to the quaint town centre.

Stayed here purely by chance after driving down from Cromer in Norfolk and loved the feeling of being away from the hurly burly of day-trippers and made to feel very welcome. Our large executive double room on the first floor faced the front of the hotel but was quiet and the bed was large and very comfortable, airy and light and we had free WiFi in the room. Drinks in the bar with friendly locals, great chat and the staff were wonderfully friendly and helpful. The dinner menu had a wide range of dishes all beautifully cooked and the freshly cooked breakfast was hot and satisfying. We found many inspired chefs in this part of the UK and the Randolph was no exception. Flat screen television, absolutely clean and spotless with nice people and good parking. Very good for travellers exploring the Suffolk Coast and the Broads. The RSPB Minsmere is only about 5 miles away and well worth a visit.

Room Tip: We had a fabulous executive room in the front of the hotel, spacious, light and airy.

My family enjoyed a long weekend break staying at the Randolph on a Bed and Breakfast basis. The Randolph is a large Victorian house converted into an hotel. From the moment we arrived all the staff were friendly and helpful; nothing was too much trouble for them and they went out of their way to help us. We had two rooms, one was a very large executive double room on the third floor, with a sofa and coffee table and a big bathroom. The second room was a standard double room on the first floor. This was smaller but well appointed with big windows facing the gardens. Both rooms were very clean and the beds were very comfortable. Breakfast was served in a light airy room; there was plenty of choices and the food and service was excellent. The Randolph is situated in Reydon, a short distance from Southwold. It took about fifteen minutes to walk into Southwold. The best thing about the Hotel was the friendly atmosphere.

Room Tip: Check which floor your room is on; there are no lifts and there are two flights of stairs to get to...

We were made to feel as welcome as old friends from the minute we arrived. The Hotel is spotlessly clean and the rooms (10 & 11) that we had were light and airy, with very comfortable beds . The staff are very helpful and we got the feeling that they would do anything to make your stay more enjoyable. The breakfasts were a delight, freshly cooked and served just as you requested. We had one evening meal in the hotel during our stay and that was superb. The only down side was that we hadn't the time to stay longer and are planning our next stay as soon as time allows.

Room Tip: Our rooms were on the top floor and very quiet

My wife and I stayed for two nights on a B&B basis, midweek in August and dined in the restaurant once. The Randolph described our room (9) as an 'executive double', but I would say that is stretching the definition somewhat. The room, on the top floor (up 36 steps), was spacious and very clean but the furniture seemed rather tired. The hotel appears to have had major investment in a refit recently, but I got the impression that they could have spent a little more on the rooms, well number 9 anyway. However, at £120 per night in high season on the outskirts of Southwold, this was actually good value.
The breakfasts were of good quality and, for those seeking to avoid the fried English, there are several other cooked options as well as the usual fruits, cereals and yogurts.
Dinner really impressed us. We started with tea smoked, pigeon breast salad and I followed with madras coated whole sea bass with saag aloo and naan bread; an inspired dish. My wife had lamb cutlets in a provencal style. We were both entirely happy with the meals.
The Randolph is in a great location for exploring the Suffolk coast and the south Broads by car. It is situated on a quiet residential estate, provides really good food, has more than adequate rooms and truly happy staff. In fact, the staff here are probably the best I have encountered for genuine desire to be helpful and it is amazing what an effect that has.
