A perfect autumn afternoon with fish and chips overlooking the beautiful Horseshoe Bay. The Flying Fish cafe was full in the fish and chip area and the restaurant was half full too.
15.95 for seafood special and chips. Great chips. Great battered fish and Thr crumbed prawns and squid rings possibly the best ever. Very good. 16 dollars for fish and chips maybe slightly more than normal but worth every cent and what a fantastic location. Staff friendly. Food came out quickly. Would reccomend to all.

We organized our twin sons 21st birthday dinner at the Flying Fish back in February. The pre-discussion with chef (Ben Schmitt) to select a menu, wines (including a tasting) and special birthday cake for our 20 guests (who had flown in from Sydney, Melbourne and Perth) already gave us a good sensation. Other than a slow start in serving the drinks and starters, the whole ambience, table arrangement in a private corner, the delicious food in ample portions - were all above expectations. A memorable evening enjoyed by all.

We went to the Flying Fishbased on its reputation. I should have checked the recent reviews first. The location and ambience were good. The fish was very good (and expensive) and came with 'hand cut chips' which turned out to be soggy wedges. When we complained the waitress told us that they'd had a number of complaints about them! It spoiled what otherwise would have been a good meal. Can't understand what is special about hand cut chips anyway.

No, maybe we chose the wrong restaurant! But the above statement came from a waiter when we explained why we were disappointed with our meals. This restaurant used to have great meals back in theb old days, but in recent years the food hasn't kept up with its lingering reputation. After a two year gap, we gave it one more try - but never again. Chicken breast cut in thick slices - advertised as smoked gallat of chicken - had no flavour (not even smokey) and understandably dry since it came without a sauce. The special fish was cooked to the correct consistency, but its flavour was unremarkable. When asked about our meal as the plates were cleared, we explained our disappointment, but there was no response from the kitchen. While paying our bill, staff asked about our meal and expressed concern at our response ... until the waiter suggested that maybe we'd chosen the wrong food.

We had lunch at this restaurant and being regular visitors to Port Elliot don't regularly visit this restaurant because it has always been on the expensive side (with so many options in the region) This visit we were pleasantly surprised with the prices. Don't know what the dinner menu is but the lunch menu was reasonable. My husband and I chose the open steak sandwich which was just delicious and the others at our table chose the Grilled Mullet. Everyone at our table was very impressed with the food. Also had a great wine list . Also noticed that they have a breakfast menu at good prices. They are in the entertainment book for 25% off the bill.
The view from this restaurant is spectacular and if it was in somewhere in France or anywhere in Europe for that matter, you would be paying exorbitant prices for the privilege of eating there. There is also a casual dining option next door. Definitely one of our hidden treasures on Horseshoe Bay South Australia!
