“pretty, but unfortunate event and unfriendly staff”
Reviewed 17 October 2010

The place was great with its cleanliness and all, but we were probably very unfortunate to be there on the night with a blackout. There were no lights and electricity whatsoever.

We experienced the power failure at 6pm and asked the reception for help. They said that power would be restored by 730pm, which we were fine with and went ahead with our dinner nearby. However upon returning at 9pm, it was pitch dark still!

We then phoned the reception again and they were very quick to deny all fault and said that it was the road works' fault. They said that power would be restored at 1am instead. They could have found that out earlier in the day that about the roadworks and that there would be no electricity, but they still sold us the room nonetheless! It wouldn't help matters for us to have the lights back on only after 4 hours. However, she was kind enough to suggest another motel that we could use.

Thing was, everything was dark and our luggage and belongings were all already unpacked. If she had told us that at 6pm we could have gladly moved to the motel they suggested. Plus she said that we couldn't return the following morning (which meant that we had to pack and up and leave by that night? In the dark?) And as we asked more questions, the receptionist got more impatient and didn't interested anymore. To save us both trouble, my family ended up not moving and went to sleep straightaway (after dinner, and at 930pm) in the dark and in the cold (the heater couldn't work without power too).

This might probably be an occasional thing, but the communication of the hotel ought to improve. The place was indeed pretty, but my family didn't enjoy it one bit (plus the fact that it wasn't cheap either). We could have went back to Adelaide city to get a comparable room that had power.

The rooms have recently been refurbished. They’re adequate but by no means luxurious and suffer from a distinct lack of storage space. How easy it would have been for the renovators to have simply added a few drawers somewhere, but no, they overlooked to do that, so all you have is a large cupboard with hanging space and a single shelf on top that’s taken up with spare blankets and pillows.

The room has a microwave, a small fridge and tea and coffee-making facilities, but space constraints make dining in, a complicated procedure. But we did get plenty of mileage out of the large, new Samsung digital TV which gave crystal-clear reception and a good range of channels inc Sky News and Fox Sports.

Bathroom is the original: it’s small and pokey. The shower worked well but there’s no bath. A shower mat to prevent slipping was a nice touch that too many other places overlook. Unfortunately, again, no storage space apart from a narrow window ledge.

The pool area is undercover and includes a handy little spa and a sauna (which was out of action) and comfortable chairs with cushions. It’s a nice place to relax - and that’s when the covering comes in handy if you want to avoid that boiling SA sun. And the water is heated.

Being poolside, our room did get noisy occasionally, especially from some early-morning young swimmers, but nighttimes it was quiet enough.

Staff were polite and helpful. Anything you want or need, you only have to ask!

Hahndorf is a small town with a population of under 2,000, so no matter where you are, you’re never far from anything. But for the record, the Motor Lodge is about as central as you can get. Step out the front door and walk though the car park and in two minutes you’re in the middle of town. A few metres up the road, you’ll find the well-stocked IGA supermarket. The town has a host of souvenir shops, clothing boutiques and restaurants.

For meals, try the Hahndorf Hotel, which is next door to the Motor Inn or the German Arms a few doors down. At the end of the street (the Adelaide end) at No 98 is the Old Mill Hotel which offers a buffet every night for a reasonable $20 a head (go to www.hahndorfoldmill.com).

Hahndorf is ideally situated in the heart of the Adelaide Hills, about 40km from the Adelaide CBD, with easy access to many nearby attractions.

I recommend visiting the National Motor Museum at Birdwood an easy 30 min drive away. If you want to catch a wave or visit the seaside, Port Eliot and Victor Harbour are also about 45 mins drive away. Mount Lofty Summit is another nearby attraction worth visiting for excellent views over Adelaide.

If you’re driving you’ll find ample parking in the motel car park itself or the larger one just outside.

We paid $695 for a five night stay (Thurs-Tues) in a double room without breakfast, in early Feb.

Overall we were satisfied and wouldn’t hesitate to go back again.

Stayed 1 night at the Hahndorf Inn Motor Lodge which is a subsidiary of the Manna of Hahndorf. Booked ahead by telephone, and gave my Visa Card details as requested. Paid $135.00c using my Access Cheque Account when leaving. Now find that I have been charged another $135.00c on my Visa Account. Contacting the Manna to have the matter corrected, I find the Office Manager reluctant to sort the matter out. Please be careful not to get charged twice or more to the point ROBBED by incompetent and reluctant office staff. Poul Kirkebjerg of South Guildford, Western Australia.

Dear Mr Kirkebjerg, We are very sorry to hear that your recent stay at the Hahndorf Inn Motor Lodge was less than satisfactory. The Hahndorf Inn Motor Lodge and The Manna are independantly managed and unfortunately, in error, the Hahndorf Inn Motor Lodge charged you twice for your stay, which has since been refunded. We do hope to welcome you back to Hahndorf in the near future.

Another restaurant which we stopped at "on spec" during our travels in Oz. It was so good that my wife demanded we return to eat there again before we left for Perth.

A mixture of traditional German fayre and normal Chargrill on the menu. Some really big juicy steaks. My wife tucked into the Kassler chop on both occassions we visited whereas I went for Turkey the first time and steak on the return.

The deserts were equally as scrumptious and the drinks prices were not outrageous.

All in all a great eating establishment with tables out front as well albeit on the sidewalk.

Seemed very popular on both visits we made.

Kids more than welcome and a pay area indoors also for them.
