I did a full day of birding with Doug chasing 10 bird species in the rainforest on Mt Lewis. The cost of $350 for the full day was good value. Doug’s knowledge of the area and the calls/behaviour of the birds ensured I found the species I was after including two that were particularly difficult due to the time of year. Once the main targets were out of the way Doug added in some great birding around Julatten and on the way back in to Port Douglas. Doug had a great attitude throughout- nothing was too much trouble.
I read an article where someone had seen 90 birds, so I expected Doug to beat that.... and he did. We saw 93 birds. Of these about 80 are birds I have never seen before in the wild including Tawny Frogmouths (4), Papuan Frogmouth, Bustards, various herons, various kingfishers, various parrots etc. When I return, I will definitely take another of his trips. One of the best days in Queensland. Highly recommended for animal lovers. You will need binoculars or a zoom lense.
I only had the time for a halfday with Doug, and we saw 88 species!! This is my third guiding with Doug, and he always puts guest first, no rush to move on, goes for requested species. Absolutely wonderful to visit his special bird hotpsots. Spotless crake in pic
Thankyou Mark for your great review. Always a pleasure birding with you. Spotless Crake was thanks to the mid day rain - ha -ha.
We were so happy to go birding with Doug Herrington. He was working up north and made a special trip just to accomodate us for which we are appreciative. We were able to see over 90 birds in a short period of time. The first 65 were in the first 3-4 hours of the day. All the great reviews about him are true. He’s easy to be around, he knows his Queensland birds and he’s very professional. We wish we were staying longer and could go birding with him again. We’ll just have to come back. Some of the birds we really enjoyed seeing were the Eastern Curlew, Bush Stone Curlew, the Rainbow Bee-eater, the Lovely Fairy Wren, Macleay’s Honeyeater, the Eclectus Parrot, the Rainbow Lorikeet, Sulfur-crested Cuckatoo, the Pale Yellow Robin, the Dusky Honeyeater, the Scarlet Honey-eater, the Red-browed Finch and of course the Kookaburra. We were so close to the Victoria’s Riflebird. He knows exactly where they are. We could hear him clearly. Wish we would’ve looked for him first thing but maybe the next time.
My partner and I had a lovely day out with Doug recenly, checking out birds from Mossman, Port Douglas, through Julatten to Mt Carbine.
Doug is great company, and can spot birds just about anywhere.
Highlights (and there were many) for me were metallic starlings nesting, and Great Bowerbirds at Mt Carbine. Papuan Frogmouths too at Julatten.
We got over 100 species in a very relaxing, pleasant day.
Thanks Doug!
Hi mickmack56
Thanks for the review. It was a great pleasure showing you some the birds and places that are special to me. BTW the Tawny Frogmouth are now nesting and I expect the Papuan Frogmouth to follow suit soon. Hope you had a pleasant and safe trip home.
Kind regards
Doug H
I had a great one-day cleanup of Julattern-Carbine-Mt Lewis birds that I was missing after three trips to the area on my own. We photographed essentially all of my targets efficiently. Additionally, Doug is very pleasant and interesting conversationalist, and reasonably priced. If I'd had time to book another day(s) with him, I would have done so.
Thanks for the review Keenbirdphotog - glad I could get your targets for you! Its great taking photographers on tour because I love a challenge and I also get a chance to point my camera at a few things. All the best with your processing - regards Doug H
