I stayed here with my sister for 3 nights. Pam and John were extremely welcoming and friendly, and full of excellent advice. The view from their house is stunning, and breakfasts absolutely divine- fruit, pancakes, coffee, so many courses! I would recommend this as a place to stay away from it all, yet only 20 mins from Port Douglas.

Beyond expectation, great service and support from Pam and John, they put us back on track again, valuable informaton about region, lovely room, good beds and bathroom. To catch our flight to Ayers Rock from Cairns we had to leave early, many thanks for the picknick basket we found in our room, a place worth to stay a few days longer as we did.

Marae is the most fantastic place I've ever stayed in. The hosts Pam and John really make the place special, being welcoming, charming and very conversational. The house is pretty special too - the perfect design for tropical living with nary a pane of glass in sight but with wrap-around wooden shutters that open straight out to the tropical air. Pam was really wonderful as my sister and I were visiting to scatter some of our parents' ashes into the ocean at Newell Beach and she put us in touch with people who could assist. And she tracked down people who even remembered my father so we could have a chat to them.

We had great conversations with Pam and John while we were there and felt like we were old friends by the time we left. Not everyone can make you feel that welcome!

Marae's location makes you feel as if you are in a wilderness lodge, rather than 1 hour from Cairns, and 10 minutes from Mossman, with an outlook across cloud-covered mountains and the Mossman Gorge in the distance. If you like bird-watching you will enjoy the lovely breakfast on the deck with birds flitting around the nectar-covered shrubs and bushes in the garden.

The rooms were just great - luxurious and private - and we even braved a swim in the pool. It was quite chilly for Far North Queensland on our visit but not enough to stop us swimming!

A wonderful place and you won't be disappointed.

The hosts, Pam and John, are marvelous, witty, charming, delightful, and best of all they live in paradise as John so aptly describes it. And he’s totally right. The house is wonderful and the two rooms very comfortable, spacious, and well appointed. The view each morning at breakfast – delicious, by the way – is breathtaking. You have to have a car to get there, though. Marae is a short drive from Mossman and Port Douglas but well worth the effort. You could hardly find a better place from which to explore the rain forest and the Great Barrier Reef. John and Pam went the extra mile to book an expert guide –many kudos to Nick Fox, a walking rain forest encyclopedia – and Calypso Cruise for the extraordinary reef adventure. We could not have asked for more.

Marae is a wonderful place to stay in the Port Douglas/Mossman area. It is about 5 miles out of town so you need a car and must value a peaceful, natural scene over walking out your hotel door to a restaurant. The setting is beautiful - you eat a fabulous breakfast on a porch with views to the rain forest mountains and Mossman Gorge. The room we had was very comfortable. The most remarkable feature though is the great effort Pam and John made to help us with our stay and make our time in the area so memorable. Pam worked very hard before we arrived helping me plan and make all the necessary reservations for the different tours and trips we scheduled, and then had to do everything all over again (and again) as the weather made us change our plans two or three times. They even helped us reschedule our flight home (which was cancelled due to a cyclone) so we wouldn't miss our spear fishing at Cooya beach (which, by the way, was the among the best experiences of our time in Australia!)

Room tip: Can't beat the room with the pool - we loved ending the day with a dip in the natural stone pool.
