“Maroochy Palms Big 4 Caravan Park -”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 January 2010

We have planned all year for our week in the Maroochy Palms Caravan Park. We have previously stayed there once and still things havent been done around the place that we were told would be fixed by xmas for the BIG rush of all the visitors.

We arrived on Boxing day. I went into the office to book in and get a boom gate pass. A lady was in reception, "by herself" when there was at least 6 people waiting. Wouldnt you think at xmas time, busiest time of the year, there would be enough staff on to help campers check in. Two ladies were also checking in, with what was obviously a hard task for Receptionist. She became quite rude started to tell the ladies 'they' were being rude. We all had a laugh and it was quite obvious she was not coping with stress. An american man came in and, (who I was to later find out, was the manager ) served him, he asked if he could have a spare key for the cabin he was in, in case he and his wife wanted to do things separately. The answer from him was..' was why would you want that? I gave you a key. Then he carried on, making a fool of this american man in front of the other customers in the reception. Eventually he agreed to give him a spare key and said wait here and ill get a key ring to put it on. He made him wait ages for it. In the meantime another staff member came out, with the same 'attitude' as the rest of the staff, annoyed cause the boom gate key wasnt working for a customer so it set off a loud ringing noise which obvioulsy upset her, she screamed down the intercom to this person instructions on what to do. Nevertheless it still didnt work. Apparently they got new boom gate keys and didnt bother to test them all before the xmas rush. So she stormed out to the customer upset they werent making her day easy. This made all of the customers, including me, laugh, one commented BOOM GATE RAGE....at this time of the year!!!! Was this trip gona get better. We'd only just arrived to our week away and already this was happening. Was there a 'candid camera' in the office.

Then another staff member actually decided to join to help out. Luckily this lady was really nice and helpful. Cause by this time tempers were being freyed, for the lack of 'help' in the office. Plus more customers arrived. I finally got checked in. 1/2 hour later.

Set up camp near the lake......if you can call it a lake. It is dreadful, it smells, there are beer cans, plastic bags floating in it. Even the wild life have dwindled since last visit, whod blame them either cause I wouldnt want to live in it.

The lake should be fenced off completely, to be child friendly, but this is not the case. Its so unsafe for children, there are parts of the lake that are quite high, and do not have any fencing around it. One would think that the area around the lake would be looked after as thats where people like to walk around...(dont ask why.....it's definately not a place you would like to sit and contemplate life).

The first night we were there it absolutely poured. We were in an area near the "pristine" (NOT) lake. We spent the whole night making sure the roof of our camper trailer didnt cave in on us. Hence very little sleep. The park has a no tarp policy.............near the lake, because the owner thinks the lake is the best part of the park and he doesnt want it looking like a 'third world country', (his words to another camping family). They had words with him, asking why cant tarps be put up if its pouring, they werent aware of the no tarp policy, he said if my staff given you the wrong story, tell me who they are and they'll be 'sacked'. His own words.

The dryers werent working either, they had money stuck in the, Handy in that weather.

We went out and purchased pegs and a tarp to put up overnight, just so we didnt get waterlogged. Again. We proceeded to put it up then our fellow campers who the owner had said about the third world comment, came over and warned us about him. we said we cant possibly sleep another night without the tarp. He made them go out and buy a gazebo. $300 later for us and $250 later for them. The gazebo was allowed up but no tarp, still. We thought we'll put it up at dark and take it down in the morning. To save the "third world country look". It wasnt to happen. We agreed to leave it down, my husband talked to a staff member who will go un-named said that this idea from the 'owner' was ridiculous and he agreed that tarps should be able to be used. The million dollar caravans were allowed to be covered in tarps. The campers recognised the only reason they were allowed tarps was because the werent next to the "lake". The only reason they used them we thought is that the owners are too lazy to get on the roofs and clean them. (Apart from Caravan #4 in photoes below. Please see state of c/van and tarp, and they didnt want us to put one up...brand new).

Upon leaving the park waterlogged, 5 days early and money down the drain, in the office handing in the key, another irrate family were in there, asking why couldn't they book the days they actually want, apparently only this big 4 has a policy saturday to saturday....they arrived monday, they were upset why couldnt they pay monday to saturday. They were told 'we all' have different policies, this is ours. The customer commented he's stayed at a few Big 4 and none of the others have this rule. Office staff then commented next year will be Sunday to Sunday, and then on.

So Anyone who has had an experience like ours, good luck and I hope you find a better choice next time. We certainly will. We have been waiting for this holiday all year, they ruined everything.
