We've been coming here for a weekly Sussex break for the past 13 years for two reasons.
Firstly, its location. Little Marshfoot is on the south-east edge of Hailsham, with just a single small farm between it and the Pevensey Levels. As such, we've always found it a very relaxing place to stay. It's ideal for winding down and reducing your stress levels (I talk from experience!). If you’re a cyclist, it offers the opportunity for some nice rides across the Levels without touching a main road for miles.
While Hailsham itself doesn’t have the picturesque chocolate box appeal of nearby villages like Alfriston, it’s a great base for a Sussex holiday. It has got a decent Waitrose, a small cinema, pubs, restaurants and some interesting shops and a petrol station. But the key thing is it’s so centrally placed for accessing the whole of East Sussex by car. Whether it's a day trip to Rye, spending an afternoon in Eastbourne or Brighton, popping down to Birling Gap or Beachy Head or visiting the many attractions in the area, we've always found it so easy to jump in the car and get onto a main road.
The second reason is Little Marshfoot itself. The chalet itself has all the facilities we need for a week away; fully-kitted out kitchen/diner, sitting room with TV & DVD player after a tiring day trip out and, with a 14-year old YouTuber son, the free wifi is a must! It gives us all the flexibility we look for in a self-catering holiday.
The patio and garden is ideal for breakfast in the sunshine, sipping a glass of wine at sunset or sitting back in one of the garden chairs at 3am to watch meteor showers (very little light pollution around here; the old Royal Observatory at Herstmonceaux is only a couple of miles away across the Levels).
This year we were actually taken aback by the changes to the place. Each year we've been, there have always been changes, but this year, we were really surprised. Suddenly, we found the second bedroom & ensuite bathroom replaced by a lovely sitting room (with a comfy & easy-to-use sofa bed), the remaining bathroom tastefully modernised (in such a way that even the 14-year old YouTuber said "Wow!"), new furniture and a more spacious kitchen/diner. We've always found the place totally suited to our needs, but the 'makeover' left us more than impressed.
Lastly, but by no means least, the welcome and attention given has, for us, always been an ideal balance; any problems (e.g. broken light bulbs or whatever) sorted out promptly and advice given (to explain new equipment in the chalet, what's going on locally, places to go, etc) without ever being obtrusive.
Will we be going back again in 2017? Most definitely.
