The best way to sum up the Spook is quirky. It’s very small and cosy – the CH works a treat and I bet it's warm in winter. It's right in the middle of Winster, which is a charming Derbyshire village set in a stunning landscape between Matlock and Bakewell and connected to both by bus. There's a pub about 100 metres down the hill which serves excellent food and opposite it a village shop, which is something of a social hub.
Facilities-wise, the cottage's kitchen and bathroom are fine, and the upstairs living space comfortable. The bedroom is a sort of mezzanine affair accessed by a step-ladder, which is a canny use of limited space, but not easy for the unathletic. Don't worry, there is also a sofa bed.
A problem with the location is the mobile reception. You have to climb the hill to get any signal at all. I was rather hoping this would have been compensated for by the advertised wifi, but the router for this was situated some distance away in the owner's house and even with a booster provided barely 10 minutes of internet access per day.
