After of day travelling, a bite to eat nearby was needed. Having looked at reviews of the 4 pubs within walking distance, this wasn't first choice but actually lovely small characterful pub. No airs and graces, small so tables limited, but service this from the only bar maid who did everything from serving the drinks, the food and clearing after - all with a smile at all times. Food clearly cooked to order and fresh as a couple of dishes ran out while we were there, but I'd rather than than everything from a freezer or of suspect shelf life. Anyway although simple, these were good ingredients cooked well - my rack of lamb was the best I've had. Great place if give 4-legged friends as they seem very welcome everywhere, so perhaps if you aren't canine inclined, not for you but I think Peak District pubs in general probably an issue if not a dog lover... Anyway I reckon good reliable bet in Tideswell.

We stayed in Tideswell for the weekend and popped into our "weekend local" for a drink.

It's a proper pub with real ale and lots of gin and whisky.

Despite lots of locals there was a friendly atmosphere. Definitely recommend it unlike another pub in Tideswell.

Family meal supposed to be a nice trip out while visiting friends but was distressed by the obvious staff issues I felt bad for the poor woman. Not an establishment for a family and the food was just below par had better at a little chef.

Decided to go for a last minute trip away and found this little gem, good beers, lovely accommodating staff. Had abit too much to drink tho! But had a lovely time. Missed breakfast the first morning (because we were too hungover) but had a great one on the next. Will be returning in the future!

Only criticism is we couldn't stay longer!

This pub is the nearest one to where we live but we don’t call it our local. Despite there being 3 pubs in Tideswell our ‘local’ is the Red Lion in the next village, Litton.
We visited for lunch 18 months ago, for a drink about a year go and then again this Sunday for lunch in the hope that, as the H&J has changed hands in between, it might have improved.
Our experience has been pretty much the same each time - nothing bad but nothing to make us go back again quickly.
The atmosphere in the pub was pleasant, the decor however is in urgent need of attention, especially the paint and furniture, which could make a huge difference. The large TV doesn’t help.
The welcome at the bar was ok and the beer choice was good, a Bradfield and a Little Critters (If only all pubs in the Peak District and beyond would embrace the plentiful amazing local brews they have on their doorstep rather than feel the need to add beer miles from distant mediocre breweries).
The food choice on a blackboard was ok too, mains from about £8 to £15, I had to ask if there was a Sunday roast which there was. The food came fairly quickly and it was ok.
With a bit of effort this could be a lovely village pub with reasonably priced food and good beer, but at the moment it may be another year before we venture back.

Thank Chris B
